While UNT had to punt on its first three possessions, Houston scored 17 points.

In the second quarter, UNT’s running game broke out with two touchdowns of its own. Redshirt freshman Antoinne Jimmerson scored on a one-yard touchdown and senior Jeremy Brown had a 48-yard touchdown of his own, where he broke multiple tackles en route to pulling the team within 10 points.

But the Houston offense always had a response to a Mean Green score.

In the third quarter, a seven-yard rushing touchdown by redshirt junior quarterback Derek Thompson once again pulled the Mean Green within 10 points of the Cougars. However, the Cougars went on to score 10 straight points to push the lead to 41-21 at the end of the third quarter.

On the night, Houston racked up 624 total yards and scored on eight of 11 possessions. In last year’s 48-23 loss to Houston, the Cougars gained 690 total yards and 32 first downs to spoil Apogee Stadium’s opening in Denton.

Houston also ran 77 plays on the night, getting 35 first downs. That’s a first down every 2.2 plays.

Sims had a career night for Houston, rushing for 210 yards on 10 attempts (21 yards per rush) and reeling in 55 receiving yards. He had two total touchdowns.

The top performer for the Mean Green was Brown with 80 rushing yards and 36 receiving yards. He had one touchdown.

“We will be back,” head coach Dan McCarney said. “There is a lot of character in that locker room. Kids are hurting and coaches are hurting. We care. We expect to win and when we don’t we’re really disappointed.”

UNT will play the University of Louisiana at Lafayette on Tuesday, Oc. 16 in Denton for the Mean Green’s only home game in the month of October.

Don't we have to get there before we can go back? I would like to get there for once...

Agree with you 100%

Furthermore, its not the character of the kids that concerns me.

Just what about Coach Mac's character do you question? Coaching is one thing...Character is another matter.

I think he was saying he is more concerned with the product on the field than the character of the kids at this point.

UNT didn't HAVE to punt on their first 3 possessions...and shouldn't have on 2 of them for sure...the writing was on the wall...in first qtr.

this was a coaching error.

The first and most important step is to eliminate the roadblocks that destroy every season; paycheck games to Oklahoma, Alabama, Texas, LSU, etc. We can fib and call them opportunity games or whatever, but those games and the ensuing 1 and 3 (or worse) starts every year taint each season, and eventually the whole program.

North Texas hasn't had an average (2 and 2 against Div 1 teams) start to a season since 1980. That's a very long time with 1 and 3 or worse starts. It makes it extremely difficult for fans to be excited about the remaining games. Each season may be viewed as salvageable but that's hardly anything to get excited about.

Stop that predetermined losing and fan support and recruiting will rapidly improve.

Where do we make up that revenue? I don't want to play those games either, but the AD needs to pay the bills.

Well, this year, Houston and Troy are 2 of those losses. It wasn't a body bag game that kept us from starting 2-2. It was Troy. And then Houston.

2011 - Last year, we opened with FIU and got blown out. If we'd have won that game... 2-2. Ignoring those "predetermined losses", we're talking about Tulsa and FIU.

2010 - Rice, Army, ULL - Which of these were the body bag games or predetermined losses?

2009 - Ball State, Ohio, Middle Tennessee, UL Lafayette... Those were 4 of our first 5 games.

So much is being made of those body bag games, but there seems to be an outright denial of the absolute truth... we've gotten beaten down by EVERYONE in recent years, with regularity. Body bag games aren't killing us - everyone is.

Simple, you build your fan base and sell tickets to home games. The first step in building your fan base is eliminating the payday automatic loss games that cause your team to start 1 and 3 or worse every single year.

It's not instantaneous gratification like the paycheck from a game, but long term it's the more sound method.

Indeed! Yes...and you have more folks join the Mean Green Club to help cover the cost of scholarships. Takes a bunch of pressure off the AD to schedule these early season "payday" games. But, alas, it seems we have more than a few so-called fans who don't join for some reason. Trust me...as a Volunteer Rep for the Mean Green Club I've heard lots of excuses. And, here I am talking about excuses.....we all know the difference between an honest reason and some lame excuse. Want to help stop these "paycheck games"? Well...you can....join the Mean Green Club, increase your level of membership if you are a current member and do what Adler mentions above. Be part of the solution...not part of the problem. You CAN definitely do something to help.

And you can start helping as early as Tuesday by showing up for the LaLa game...no excuses!
