Houston 35, Rice 14

Aided in part by Rice (1-4, 0-2 in CUSA) missing starting QB Taylor McHargue, Houston's defense had its best outing of the year, holding Rice to 338 total yards in Houston's (1-3, 1-1) first win. The Cougar offense overcame three turnovers to roll up 604 yards of offense, including a season-high 158 yards and 3 TDs from RB Charles Sims. Houston rushed for 243 yards after coming into the day averaging just more than 110 per game. QB Driphus Jackson, making his first start for Rice, threw for 272 yards and 2 TDs but completed less than half his passes.

AND

North Texas 20, Florida Atlantic 20

Derek Thompson bailed out a North Texas (2-3, 1-1 in Sun Belt) offense that got nothing from its usually dependable running game. The Mean Green only rushed for 56 yards on 29 carries, but Thompson (251 yards, 2 TDs, INT passing) helped UNT build a 17-0 lead on a 14-yard TD pass midway through the third quarter. The defense, after giving up back-to-back TDs to see the lead cut to 17-14, stopped FAU (1-4, 0-2) on its final two possessions to preserve the win. Linebackers Zachary Orr (10 tackles, 1 TFL) and Derek Akunne (9 tackles, INT) had big games for UNT for the second straight week

More Houston Thoughts

1. Houston has scored only 13 & 6 points in two of their first 4 games.

2. They have given up 30 or more points in 3 of 4 games (30 Texas State, 56 La Tech, 37 UCLA)
