With the disappointing loss against Troy in our Sun Belt home opener this Houston game becomes even more important. After Houston, with the ULL game being nationally televised on the dreaded Tuesday night, you need a good performance - dare I say win - to "win" back the students and fans for the next home game that I will label "challenge/opportunity".

Yes you read that right, after Houston on the road, UNT faces a salty ULL team at home on a Tuesday night. If you live in the DFW area you know Tuesday as the work/school night when traffic on I35 is at a standstill.

To their credit, the AD has done a lot to try and get people to attend the Tuesday night game on national television. But there is only so much they can do. They need a win or at minimum a hard fought close ball game to help seal the deal.

Houston is also a big recruiting rival for UNT. Rival may be too strong a word as Houston has typically won these battles. The move up to C-USA and regional rivalries will help but let's be honest - a road win against Houston would do a lot to help sway recruits to choose Denton for their college careers.

The last time UNT traveled to Houston it was in the Dodge regime against Rice and it was an absolute embarrassment as the Mean Green lost 77-20. I believe there may still be a couple of players (Jeremy Philiips?) who were around in 2008 when that travesty occurred. I hope they will remember the pain of that loss and inspire their teammates to do better. I know a lot of fans who made that trip and swore they wouldn't do it again. Hopefully they will reconsider and give Mac and co. another chance.

I hope that North Texas gives it their all. Houston is still a talented team but seems to be trying to find themselves. If you are UNT, there may not be a better opportunity to snatch a win from them. As they move to the Big East next season, and UNT to C-USA it would be very compelling to say the Mean Green won in Houston the last time they played.

Mac made the point that during the "glory years" UNT did not fare well in their non-Conference games. This is a good, no not good GREAT opportunity to make a statement about the direction of this program. A win at Houston will also wash away the nasty taste of losing a home game against Troy they should have won. GMG!

For those that don't think things are changing around here and want to pick out all the negatives, can't you feel the difference between the current interest level and the apathy that has been here for the last 8 years?

There was a lot of excitement for the opening of the season, there was a lot of excitement for the Troy game, now there is excitement again for a big game against Houston. It has been a long time since I can remember this many meaningful games so early in the season. And we still have most of our conference games ahead of us. In the words of our coach, let's kick some Cougar ASSSS!

GO MEAN GREEN!
