So, last Saturday I'm driving in my wife's car which is equipped with Sirius radio and listening to the TCU network feed of their game with UVa (rooting for the 'Hoos). During a time-out, the TCU announcer reads a promo about the UNT Heath Science Center. At the end of the promo, he continues, "The University of North Taxes Health Science Center....a proud supporter of the TCU Horned Frogs"

I have to say this bugged me to no end. I know the Health Science Center is in Ft Worth but still...

But why stop there, here are some more suggestions:

The University Of North Texas-Dallas, a proud supporter of the SMU Mustangs

The University if North Texas, a proud supporter of Texas Woman's University

The possibilities are endless!

This has been going on for awhile and It did bug me too...later when I thought it thru it made more sense. You have to keep in mind UNTHCS is right smack in Fort Worth and they rely on support from business and political leaders in the City. The two examples you cite are not fair...TCU is THE TEAM in Fort Worth and believe me UNT has competition for funding and support in Fort Worth from other not-for-profit hospitals with MUCH bigger war chests than we will ever have. UNTHSC is using TCU as a POWERFUL advertising medium, nothing more.

Is UT Southwestern Medical a proud supporter of SMU? I doubt it.

Why would the BOR approves this? There is all kinds of advertising available in Fort Worth without involving supporting a rival college. I see this as a way to distance themselves from the UNT system which seems to counter what the BOR would want.

My guess is someone in the UNT Heath Science Center went off the reservation on this one. Maybe this is why they are considering making them part of UNT which I thought was a lame idea. A reaction that maybe should be reconsidered.

It is not beyond thinking that they could be engineering a spin off into an entirely separate entity or joining another University's system. Anything is possible in Texas politics.

It's not the board of regents' place to approve individual marketing commercials. The BOR helps form the long term strategies but not this one commercial. Same goes for individual budget line items. The BOR may approve the overall HSC marketing budget but might not have visibility to where all the moneys go as part of the marketing budget.
