Derek Thompson’s return to form came at quite possibly the most unlikely of times Saturday night.

North Texas’ junior quarterback and his receivers had struggled all season long, missing on throws, dropping passes when they did get to the right place at the right time and generally looking out of sorts.

A game against national power Kansas State didn’t seem like the best of opportunities to get back on track, but that is exactly what it turned out to be.

Thompson set a school record by connecting on 89.2 percent of his throws — a mark that was somewhat lost in the wake of a 35-21 loss to the Wildcats.

As great as Thompson's performance was last Saturday, there are still a couple of areas that he needs to work on.

At least two of the sacks were coverage sacks. He had plenty of time to throw the ball away but held on. The other area is long passes. I don't recall a deep route by North Texas. We were beaten by two touchdowns which you could equate to the long passes to #86. On one he was wide open but Klein almost overthrew him. The receiver made a great catch extending his arms just enough to take it in. The other was the often reviewed 'did he have full control when he went out of the end zone?' catch.

I don't mean to be nit-picky nor take away from Thompson's great performance but those can be the difference between a good team and a championship team.

Just to jump on Vito because it's popular at the moment, I'll say that I'm not so sure that I would refer to K-State as a "national power" multiple times, but I do agree that they did have a very good year last season and a nice start thus far in 2012. Guess we'll just have to wait and see on that national power thing. As far as DT is concerned, he definitely performed up to expectations on Saturday, and I sure hope that continues.
