How so?

Marquette assistant coach Scott Monarch gave a Marquette recruit apparel and also drove him home, which have been deemed as secondary violations.

The violations were very minor and did not involve a former Marquette assistant coach that is currently coaching in Denton.

Wow. Gave him some Marquette apparel (translation: t-shirt) and a ride home. People losing careers over this. Reminds me of the NCAA silliness where you can give a player a bagel without violation, but if you put cream cheese on it, it is considered buying the athlete a meal and a violation. Or how about the university can get into trouble if a fan talks to a recruit at a game. More NCAA madness. When will this stop?

This particular incident sounds more like if the fired assistant had just been honest he would still have a job. The violations were minor, but lying and trying to cover them up is something the school can't allow.

I believe this was an independant law firm investigation hired by Marquette that found these violations, and it was Marquette's decision to fire the assistant. Like Army said, it was the lying that got the guy canned, not the very minor violations.

The NCAA deserves a lot of criticism, but not for this.
