Ok, so Thursday night, I worked the activities mart at freshman orientation. It is held in the colliseum and each campus organization has a table set up to pass out info and recruit the new students.

WELL, our APO table was two tables away from THE ALBINO SQUIRREL preservation whatever they are group. They had tons of unknowing freshman crowded around their both. It somehow was one of the most popular table there. They passed out stickers saying I (hart) the albino squirrel.

It seemed like every freshman that passed by our table was wearing one of those horrible stickers. I think it is insane that they are still pushing this issue. It failed in the SGA legislation, the thing is rumored to be dead but they don't quit.

It just made me crazy because we heard a bunch of the kids crowded around the table saying "this is so cool".......hopefully, once they start at UNT, they will realize how completly ridiculous it is to have a secondary mascot like an albino squirrel. blink.gif

Come on, guys, what's a little squirrel between friends? It's kinda like when your parents told you that you couldn't have a pet of your own. Scratchy the Super Squirrel will never become a second mascot but let's let the little guy have his brief minutes of fame. The more that excites "the masses" in the long run will be beneficial to our sports attendance. mellow.gif

I agree. The way to get rid of it is to make it SEEM popular. Then it won't be seen as "alternative".

Creativity? Aren't there several other organizations just like it in this state and others?

The organization is fine. But when the organization spearheaded a movement to make an albino squirrel a represenative of my university, the act wore thin.

And that's not being close minded, that's having pride in my school and the way it is percieved.

I am a very open-minded person.

But I draw the line at groups that attempt to make a SQUIRREL part of my school's identity. North Texas has enough misconceptions to fight without adding a laughable secondary mascot to the mix.
