• It takes veteran leadership to excel at this level, and we saw our first example of it tonight. Rookie DT Sir Calvin Wallace was having trouble in an early drill, and senior Tevin Cantly pulled him aside to explain things one-on-one.

• Remember, in the picture album below you will see players with black stripes on their helmets. Those are for the rookies, who have to earn a clean helmet from coach Mac.

• We have a lot of new names on the roster, including a couple of interesting walk-ons. One of them being quarterback Jordan Gill out of Whitesboro. Gill led the Bearcats to the playoffs last season, which is a pretty notable accomplishment in itself. But in Whitesboro’s case, its cause for a 100-year celebration. Gill took the playoff-starved town and high school to the playoffs for the first time since 1911, ending the 100-year drought. Gill ran for 124 yards and scored four TD’s in the playoff clinching win in the final week of the regular season.

• For those of you hoping to see Darius Terrell and Reggie Pegram in Mean Green uniforms this year, keep your fingers crossed for one of them. Terrell will sit out after transferring from Texas. Pegram still has a chance at playing this year, as his appeal remains up in the air and hopefully will be decided by the end of August. Terrell, by the way, checked in at 220 pounds and 6-3, and just from the look of his build he’s built like another guy named Terrell who had a long career in the NFL. Pegram, a Purdue transfer, is the cousin of former Mean Green running back Erric Pegram, who still ranks 15th all-time in rushing at North Texas with 1,613 yards.
