I'm wondering what impact the 2012 bowl bans might have on bowl season.

If I've got this right there are 35 bowls with 70 slots.

In 2011 we had 72 teams make the cut, but USC was the only banned team and WKY got left out.

In 2012 there will be 3 teams with bowl bans; Ohio State, North Carolina, and Penn State.

So this should mean every team that goes 6-6 should be guaranteed a bowl because there is a shortage of teams to compete for the slots.

That's good news, I'd hate to go 6-6 or better and get left out. I felt bad for WKU last year.

Does anyone know what would happen in a scenario where there aren't enough bowl eligible teams? It really doesn't seem like it is too unlikely based on the above numbers, although there are 4 more FBS teams this year. It'll be interesting to see what happens. I've been saying all along this is our year for a bowl.

I'd prefer if no 6-6 teams went to a bowl but since that's not going to happen might as well make sure everyone can. If there's not enough teams I wonder if the NCAA would provide a special waiver to let a 5-7 team go.

The bowls have turned into the high school playoff system and that's too bad. First or second in your conference should qualify a team for a bowl game as long as they have a winning record. This "everybody gets a medal" society we live in awards mediocrity.
