GREENVILLE, N.C. - With the start of the Pirates' 2012 football campaign just a little over a month away, the East Carolina University Athletics Department has eclipsed the 20,000 mark in season ticket sales for the sixth-straight year.

Under head coach Ruffin McNeill, East Carolina set new school records during the 2011 season in total attendance (300,069) and average attendance (50,012) besting the previous marks of 297,987 and 49,665 - both set in 2010.

The success has been a reflection of growing season ticket sales at the box office, following a then-record of 16,258 in 2006 with a 22,000 number in 2007, a 21,160 total in 2008, a 21,293 figure in 2009, and a new standard of 23,436 in 2010, which was eclipsed last fall (24,188).

Good for ECU...where the heck is that place anyway? How close is the nearest D-I competition and pro football team? Just asking...UNT should strive for this number as well. It would be a good step in the right direction. I am sure that goal is within reach...we, of course, need our fans and local community to step up and actually buy the tickets...that would certainly help.

I, too, wonder how many season tickets have been sold so far this year...the "selling season" is far from over, but it would be nice to know how we are doing. Anyone have an idea?

Anyone know what our season ticket sales were for 2011?

I'll take the under.

ECU is in the eastern part of the state (of course!)...Greenville near Kinston and Goldsboro. In other words, they are the biggest city in that part of the state. The nearest D1 competition are the Triangle schools; NC State, UNC and Duke.

They parallel us in a number of ways...started as a teacher's college then a college, university, etc. They have an excellent medical school and dental school. In the old days, they had the best music school in the region and their dean left to become dean at North Texas. This was in the 60's.

The kicker is they did not play major college football until the mid-70s.

Their academics are no great shakes and it is one of the easiest schools to get into in the state. Since they are not anywhere near a major population center, they have never been known as a commuter school.

Talk about a step up when we move to CUSA in 2013. Here's a couple of comparisons for the new CUSA vs the new Sun Belt based on last years attendance in football & basketball.

Football: Sun Belt average 18,292 CUSA average 24,749

Basketball: Sun Belt average 2,646 CUSA average 4,111
