LAFAYETTE – Shawn Forrest, a 14-year collegiate coaching veteran who spent the last four seasons at North Texas, has been named assistant men's basketball coach at the University of Louisiana. The announcement was made by men's basketball head coach Bob Marlin, and the hiring is pending approval by the University of Louisiana System Board of Supervisors.

“We are happy to welcome Shawn into the Ragin' Cajuns basketball family,” Marlin said. “As we went through the search and tried to determine which candidate fit best in our program, Shawn's name kept coming to the top.

“Shawn’s experience as a coach and recruiter in the Sun Belt Conference should provide an immediate benefit to the program,” Marlin added. “The knowledge that he has gained as a coach at the Division I level over the last two decades will help us to achieve the level of success that we are working towards.”

While serving as an assistant coach at North Texas (2008-09 through 2011-12), Forrest worked with teams that averaged 21.3 wins per season. In 2009-10, the Mean Green went 24-9, won the Sun Belt crown and faced Kansas State in the first round of the NCAA Championship.

Forrest was instrumental in helping land the 2010-11 recruiting class of Tony Mitchell, Jordan Williams, Chris Jones, and Roger Franklin, which was ranked as high as No. 31 in the country.

Prior to moving to Denton, Texas, Forrest worked as an assistant coach at Arkansas State for six seasons (2002-03 through 2007-08). He helped the Red Wolves to multiple Top 100 recruiting classes, which included a pair of two-time All-Sun Belt Conference players, a Sun Belt Conference Newcomer of the Year, a league-leading scorer, second-leading scorer and third-leading scorer in the conference.

Good pickup for coach Marlin. Hopefully coach Benford can run him out of local HS coaches offices, because I highly doubt he plans on going anywhere. There will probably be an uptick in incoming talent at ULL, and we all know coach Marlin is quality. Watch for ULL to dominate the SBC for years to come (starting in 2013-14)... until they get called elsewhere.

      If we win out reg season we are in?

      Minnesota with a 3rd straight Quad 1 win. Our win in their house is looking better every game. Baring a collapse, Memphis is all but guaranteed a spot. Prior to their loss at Temple, some bracket experts had them as a 4 seed. They're 5-2 in Quad 1 games and 10-3 in Quad 1 and 2 with wins against Missouri, UConn, Michigan State, Clemson, Ole Miss, all of which are in the top 35 of NET. The resume is too strong unless they pretty much lose out. Cougar guy is wrong, though. Independent bracket experts with good track records of guessing the field still have UNT as being in contention. It's a longshot but not dead.

      TX State to the PAC 2?

      It’s interesting because I know the perception of the new PAC and AAC is that the PAC will be stronger, but where would Texas State rather go? It seems like AAC for a variety of reasons. I’m not convinced the new PAC is better than the AAC. UNLV and New Mexico holding back in the MWC, with the Northern Illinois and GCU ads have the future PAC in a bit of limbo. They have to keep performing or they will fall back fast. The SBC and AAC currently are the more stable forces, hence a certain level of power and leverage lives there. To me the PAC must break the bank to get Memphis or they are not going to lift on takeoff. GMG

      Join the Infantry in Houston - Tuesday, 2/11 at 8pm

      Rob Lanier, former SMU head coach, found out what the Infantry could do last February at Moody Coliseum. So when he moved over to Rice, inside sources suggest he slipped Tim Spaghetti some cash to make sure his home game against UNT would be on a weeknight this season. But I say, "Too bad, Rob! You can't escape us!" If you're in Houston, or are retired and can make the trip, or want to use a couple of half days like I did, join us at the terrible Tudor Fieldhouse on Tuesday, 2/11 at 8 p.m. The game has the later start because it'll be on ESPNU as the "west coast game." There are just under a hundred seats left behind our bench which would be group-rated at $25. For the second straight year I want to sell the section out. What'll make it better is the sea of green will be on national TV. It'll be different without Scott Screamin' Pera on the Rice bench, but we'll still have plenty to taunt Lanier about. Like how his son has to follow him around to maintain a D1 scholarship. And don't forget the UNT Dallas debacle. Here's what we did last year. We bought about 70 tickets, plus whatever the team was allotted, and the local alumni who bought on their own. If you are interested in joining our group for the game, message me. I've got pending communication out with the Houston alumni chapter to see if they will plan to do anything before the game like last year.       24/25 MBB Attendance Tracker

      12,400 announced at Providence today, who came into the game with a record of 9-10. Providence is about the same distance to Boston as Denton is to Dallas.
