John Schilleci has lived in Denton his entire life and thinks the North Texas town is a great place to live.

So it should come as no surprise that the Guyer incoming senior committed on Monday morning to play college football in his hometown for North Texas and head coach Dan McCarney.

Oral commitments are non-binding. The first day a class of 2013 recruit can sign a national letter of intent is Feb. 6.

“I think it was the best decision for me,” said Schilleci, who played cornerback for Guyer as a junior but will move to safety for his senior season. “My family has been a big influence on me. Me moving far from home would be selfish. I love the head coach [McCarney]. I think it was just the best choice.”

Schilleci had another offer from Washington State, a similarly downtrodden program with an accomplished head coach about to enter his first season atop the program, much like McCarney did in 2011. McCarney led the Mean Green to a 5-7 finish, equaling its win total from the previous two years combined.

Schilleci said making the decision between playing for McCarney and new Washington State head coach Mike Leach was not an easy one, but the geography made it that way.

“It’s close to home, and you know what, both coaches are very good and I think they’ll both turn their programs around,” he said. “I think UNT was the best choice for me, especially when Texas is the best place for football. They’ll have a lot of options for recruits.”

Schilleci is the second Guyer player in the class of 2013 to commit to a Football Bowl Subdivision program, joining offensive tackle Patrick Morris, who committed to TCU back in April.

Does anyone know how to pronounce his name? My guess is either Ska-LECK-e or Ska-LEE-se.

If he's trying to get teammates to follow then I hope that he's a good friend of WR Ellis Jefferson.

      If we win out reg season we are in?

      Minnesota with a 3rd straight Quad 1 win. Our win in their house is looking better every game. Baring a collapse, Memphis is all but guaranteed a spot. Prior to their loss at Temple, some bracket experts had them as a 4 seed. They're 5-2 in Quad 1 games and 10-3 in Quad 1 and 2 with wins against Missouri, UConn, Michigan State, Clemson, Ole Miss, all of which are in the top 35 of NET. The resume is too strong unless they pretty much lose out. Cougar guy is wrong, though. Independent bracket experts with good track records of guessing the field still have UNT as being in contention. It's a longshot but not dead.

      TX State to the PAC 2?

      It’s interesting because I know the perception of the new PAC and AAC is that the PAC will be stronger, but where would Texas State rather go? It seems like AAC for a variety of reasons. I’m not convinced the new PAC is better than the AAC. UNLV and New Mexico holding back in the MWC, with the Northern Illinois and GCU ads have the future PAC in a bit of limbo. They have to keep performing or they will fall back fast. The SBC and AAC currently are the more stable forces, hence a certain level of power and leverage lives there. To me the PAC must break the bank to get Memphis or they are not going to lift on takeoff. GMG

      Join the Infantry in Houston - Tuesday, 2/11 at 8pm

      Rob Lanier, former SMU head coach, found out what the Infantry could do last February at Moody Coliseum. So when he moved over to Rice, inside sources suggest he slipped Tim Spaghetti some cash to make sure his home game against UNT would be on a weeknight this season. But I say, "Too bad, Rob! You can't escape us!" If you're in Houston, or are retired and can make the trip, or want to use a couple of half days like I did, join us at the terrible Tudor Fieldhouse on Tuesday, 2/11 at 8 p.m. The game has the later start because it'll be on ESPNU as the "west coast game." There are just under a hundred seats left behind our bench which would be group-rated at $25. For the second straight year I want to sell the section out. What'll make it better is the sea of green will be on national TV. It'll be different without Scott Screamin' Pera on the Rice bench, but we'll still have plenty to taunt Lanier about. Like how his son has to follow him around to maintain a D1 scholarship. And don't forget the UNT Dallas debacle. Here's what we did last year. We bought about 70 tickets, plus whatever the team was allotted, and the local alumni who bought on their own. If you are interested in joining our group for the game, message me. I've got pending communication out with the Houston alumni chapter to see if they will plan to do anything before the game like last year.       24/25 MBB Attendance Tracker

      12,400 announced at Providence today, who came into the game with a record of 9-10. Providence is about the same distance to Boston as Denton is to Dallas.
