Big East Commissioner forced out

Recommended Posts

CUSA should invite what's left of the Big East after and go to 24 or whatever so we don't have to fill up on Sun Belt or lower level

You Tech people, always bashing the Belt, thinking your better than us...... Oh, wait....

Nevermind, your right.

That's seven. I don't understand.

corrected, but the point is the same....they have more than enough desirable/quality teams in a close group that they could lure other teams to them VS going begging to other conferences

with those 7 + 7 from the CUSA(WAC) they could have a pretty good 14 team conference with two tight divisions made up of schools that have played each other many times in the past including in the same conference

and with the 6 current members of the CUSA (not counting UCF, Memphis, SMU, UH) they would still have the 6 teams that had been together for two years (if Memphis, SMU, UH, UCF did ever play in the BE) to meet the NCAA mandate for championship participation immediately

so those teams and several current BE members will not have to go groveling to anyone IMO they can form a new conference and ask others to join them in doing so

and more importantly if those 6 CUSA teams (Tulane, Tulsa, Rice, UTEP, USM, and ECU) did leave the CUSA then it would be the remaining teams in the CUSA that would have concerns with making the NCAA mandate for 6 teams to have participated together for two consecutive years to qualify for NCAA Championship participation

they would have to possibly look to the Belt for 4 teams and see if that would qualify them (again that is if no teams play a year in their new conference first).....if the teams did play a year in their new conference first then it would still be the CUSA that would have issues because I see it has highly doubtful that any single team out of the six (Tulane, Tulsa, Rice, UTEP, USM, ECU) would decline to move to the conference with the 7 "BE" teams and one more.....the only thing that could screw it up for the new conference would be if UTEP or or both Tulsa decided to go to the MWC instead if offered then there would not be 6 teams together for 2 consecutive years in the new conference, but they would still be only a year out while the remaining CUSA would probably still be two years out since not all their teams would have moved up for a year or more

I stilll don't get that SMU to big east thing... so you go out to save a conference on the east coast with exactly one decently close team and everything else faaaaar away. But what is in it for SMU?

You could say its for the AQ...but its not gonna be here anymore....you could say that was not clear then...but there had already been a whole lot of talk about MWC/CUSA getting their own AQ or the AQ being abolished. It was already a realistic possiblity.

You could say its for the money... but SMU already has money... and with the teams that are gone and no AQ there really will not be enough money to justify punishing all your non-revenue sports and and getting beat 80-35 in basketball about 3 times a season...and the money is not gonna be nearly as good as people think. Ok all those nice NCAA bids in BB, but people are gonna be surprised how small the TV-offer will be with the new football lineup. ESPN does not need the Big east anymore to cover the east coast.

NT-fans understand what advantage it is to be in the center of your conference, and not at the fringe.

I always though that move was less than ideal for both sides, but I understood that the big east had to do something to survive....but i never understood what $mu got out of it, and I get it less and less.

All I know is that I want aerial photos of SMU's Big East home games and similar pics of UNT's C-USA home games. Will be intesting to see the difference.

Sorry you're so down about TSU going to the Belt. Honestly, after that first two years of buttwhippings, a la WKU, y'all should be fine.

I think the question you want to see is when this new tv contract comes out for the Big East: Is the money that much better for Boise & San Diego St. in the Big East than what they could have in MWC without having to throw there other sports teams under the bus?

I think that question has been answered. The money is going to be that much better or else they wouldn't have jumped ship. You are basically accusing a whole lot of school presidents and AD's of being absolute idiots. You guys really think they didn't give travel costs a thought ? Give these guys some credit, they didn't get where they are by being idiots.

As much as I'd like Tech to get ahead in college football, I just couldn't have them sacrifice other sports teams

Absolutely..............how does an AD tell his minor varsity sports coaches: "Football will be going to this conference because it is just more important than what your teams do for our school, so we will stick you in this other piddly little conference and throw you a few bones from time to time."

I think Boise and SDSU eventually come back to the MWC.

SMU has played North Texas-Denton 33 times since 1922

that is 33 times in 89 seasons including the two seasons that SMU did not play football so that is an average of one game every 2.69 years that is hardly "not playing you" and they are 28-4-1 in those games so I doubt they are "scared" as some might think

more so they are looking out for the best interest of SMU VS worrying about dragging some other program along with them because that program constantly needs a helping hand from everyone else

SMU also plays you several times in the next few years as well....if North Texas-Denton fans had as much concern for their own program VS what SMU does maybe they would be in the Big East instead of SMU

also if the Big East collapses (unlikely) then SMU and several of the others will be forming a new conference I am sure along the lines of UCF, USF, ECU, USM, Louisville, Cincy, Memphis in the east and SMU, UH, Tulane, Tulsa, LaTech, Rice and UTEP in the west

discussions like this are similar to those that thought UT would be left out in the cold because of the LHN and everyone moving around without them when the reality is that UT had more options than anyone they they made the choice of what best suited UT similar to how SMU learned from TCU about making the best choices for THEIR program instead of the choices that make North Texas-Denton fans happy

Tulane, LaTech, ECU, USM, Tulsa, UTEP and Rice would be chomping at the bit to ditch the CUSA to get in the conference above and it has plenty of "markets" and schools that know each as well and it is pretty compact

schools that had options before are not suddenly just going to be forced to go begging all of the sudden....they had options for a reason and they will have future options for a reason as well because they are proactive instead of reactive

..

HAHAHAHA... almost all those games were before 1940 We would have to be over 80 yr old to even remember them. I See SMU has a losing record again East Texas State (aka East Texas A&M ) and Centenary ..... No wonder they don't schedule them anymore... they fear them. ... Cowards.. play them..

In the past 30 years we are 2-5 against Smu.. , not great, but not cheating and kicked out of the NCAA like the other one was for part that 30 years. [ if you want to discuss pre-WWII games ..then also you should DISCUSS THE SMU GAMES OF THE 80's ... especially the later 80's.. ]. ....

The current record is nothing like the record you are quoting. I suppose if you are 90+ you might remember some of those pre WWII games.

I don't blame SMU and UH taking Big East offers...Honestly we would have done the same if we were in that position. It will be interesting to see how this pans out but I don't see as a new league starting and UNT getting ignored just like that if we continue our momentum in athletics success. SMU may have a say but when push comes to shove they won't ignore a huge state school in a top 5 market with a recruiting hotbed in all sports. In that case SMU won't have much of a say.

..

North Texas-Denton spent 12 years in D1-A from 1983 to 1994 so there is a big reason why SMU was not playing you in that time period

also SMU does not owe North Texas-Denton any games so them choosing to play you or not is really a stupid point......North Texas-Denton fans are the ones that obsess with all things SMU while SMU tries to do what is best for their program not what makes North Texas-Denton fans happy

Centenary no longer plays football so it would be impossible for SMU to schedule them and TAMU Commerce is in Division II so SMU couldn't play them.....both are stupid points

UT has a losing record against Vandy yet I doubt that Vandy fans think that UT is scared of them even though they have not played since 1928....I doubt that Vandy fans even know that or think about it because 1. they have a brain which is why they went to Vandy, 2. they have their own current wins and losses to worry about and 3. even if they did think about it they realize that UT can get the same match up closer from Rice where UT fans can show up in force to see their team play and where UT can play in front of their recruits

TCU has only played North Texas-Denton 17 times total since 1914 and only three times since 1999 and I am sure no one would buy that it is because they are "scared" since TCU is busy playing better teams at home and on the road and since TCU is busy going to BCS games and getting themselves into the Big 12 instead of worrying about what SMU does or worrying about North Texas-Denton fans and their concerns.......which is a lesson that SMU has learned from.....don't worry about what others are doing worry about yourself and don't sell yourself VS who you play sell yourself and move to the conferences that best suit you

and 7 or 8 is not a magic number the point is that the BE if it breaks up will leave a significant number of eastern and central based teams that would not have great difficulty picking up other teams to reform a new conference with if they felt that was best for them and I believe that is exactly what they would do and there would be a large number of teams ready and willing to make that move

North Texas-Denton fans were dying to get in a conference with SMU, and UH and several other potential BE members yet you now act like others that have been in a conference with them already would suddenly want nothing to do with that and instead they would stay with a bunch of teams they want to get away from (Like Tulsa fans and possibly UTEP fans looking at the MWC) and a fresh new group of move ups

SMU already has an annual game with TCU in the metro area ahd they have had Tech, TAMU, and Baylor on their schedule very frequently so I don't think they are scared of North Texas-Denton I just think they don't really see the need to schedule them yearly or any real benefit to doing so.....they are on the schedule for 4 straight years, but I don't think it will turn out how many on here think it will I would not be surprised if SMU did not take all 4 of them or go 3-1 at the worst

then they can go back to being "scared" :thumbsu:

You really don''t get it... SMU wasn't playing anyone in part of the 80's... They were suspended for cheating... and before that since they were cheating, the results are meaningless.

I realize Centenary doesn't play football now ...... the point was games that occurred many decades ago are now meaningless when evaluating a program now..

You just don't understand.... the point of anything I said. ... It was pretty obvious what I meant ..... Wow...

And no... North Texas was never "dying to be in a conference with SMU".... we just wanted to be in a more recognized conference and whether SMU was there are not ... meant nothing,. It is not all about you as you picture things... [ inflated ego is a big SMU problem, ask anyone from any college... they will just laugh ] At this point I honestly hope we never schedule SMU again.. they need us for attendance...... we don't need them.

SMU DOESN"T PLAY SOUTHLAND TEAMS ???? ... go look ....smu has played Sam Houston, S.F Austin (won by 8) and NW Louisiana, and TexState in the past 5 years..... in fact smu played mighty NW La. last year. ----what a memory---- but you want to remember games from the 20's and 30's.!! .. Since 1994.. UNT has played one Southland team, unlike SMU which schedules them regularly.

SDSU and Boise are not throwing their other sports under the bus in any way. They are members of the Big East in football only. If the presidents of those schools turned down 15M a year in TV revenue just so their women's volleyball team could play Wyoming instead of Gonzaga they should be strung up on the highest tree on their campus. This is a really stupid argument anyway. The Big East will have a replacement for Marinatto that is a much better salesman and frontman for the conference. This was unanimously approved by all Big East presidents (including the new additions).

The real issue here for UNT is the stability of the Big East. Again, should anything unexpected happen (i.e. Louisville, Cincinatti, Rutgers, and UConn leaving the conference) then you can be rest assured that East Carolina, Southern Miss, and Tulsa will be first in line and believe me they will leave CUSA in a heartbeat. Then you are left with the Sun Belt 2.0 and a few schools who have absolutely no interest in competing in D1A football (Rice, Tulane, UAB). UNT should be hoping and praying for a stabilized Big East.

Hey, why don't you show a little respect and stop acting like a 12 year old. We are the flagship school of the University of North Texas System. We go by UNT, North Texas, or the University of North Texas. We don't go by UNT-Denton, North Texas State, NTSU, or anything else you'd like us to go by. How hard is it to be cordial? Yes "Green Light To Greatness" is our new slogan. I'm not terribly fond of it, but it's ours, and no worse than "Pony Up." Even if some magical new conference were to arise out of the Big East Conference ashes, you honestly think we wouldn't be considered? You're delusional. Also, wouldn't it be fun to start scheduling basketball games between UNT-SMU? Hopefully we can meet next year...I think it would be a pretty good matchup (sarcasm).
