San Jose State athletics: On the verge of Mountain West invitation

Barring a last minute change, San Jose State is expected to receive an invitation to join the Mountain West Conference in all sports for the 2013-14 academic year, a source said.

The invite could come this week.

The move to the more prestigious MWC would be a monumental boost to SJSU’s athletic department, in particular its football program.

The Western Athletic Conference, SJSU’s longtime home, is collapsing as members jump into the MWC and Conference USA.

This weekend, media reports indicated that Utah State, Louisiana Tech and Texas-San Antonio would be leaving the conference in the summer of 2013.
