Brett Vito ran a story in his blog last night that potentially (not definitively) pointed to three finalists for the head basketball coach at North Texas to replace Johnny Jones. These are the three identified even though there could be others we don't know about. Looking at these three, in your opinion which one would be the best to carry the torch for Mean Green Basketball?

Of the three, Fran's the only one with head coaching experience. That's obviously a high priority for RV. Beyond that, he has an impressive W-L record and is very well-connected.

Tony Benford (or Shawn Forrest, for that matter) could potentially have a higher upside, but I don't think we're going the crapshoot route with this hire.

Fran, primarily because of his head coaching experience. Shawn Forrest is a very close second to me because out of the three I think he has the best chance to keep the team together and he has obviously shown himself to be a great metroplex recruiter. Benford is a far distant third, like so far back that the other two don't even realize he is behind them.

Regardless of who is chosen, I will still support the team and cheer on North Texas because this is my school and that is what I do.

IMO Shawn deserves it. Fran would be great for unt exposure...Tony benford can stay where he is because he is an assistant like Shawn so why would he even be considered ...what has he done

Agree, if we are going to take the guy with no HC experience, then go for the guy who knows the team.

I'm confused. Has Shawn Forrest just been announced at LSU, or has he actually signed a contract? Granted, I'm sure he could get out of it, but that seems questionable to me...

I voted Fran...as it looks like nearly EVERYONE else has done, too.

Remember, these are Vito's guesses. RV has pulled off shockers lately.

If you look closeley at the Petersen hire, we didnt exactly steal him. Good hire, not a great one like McCarney. So hopefully the mens hire will be a hit out of the park. Hopefully it will be Fran.

So I'm starting to wonder if Capel is really even being considered, or has declined... I haven't seen any rumors floating around out there with him other than what's on our board.

hahahahahahahahahaha

I'm giving Forrest a slight edge over Fran. I know that Forrest lacks HC experience, but the lack of recent coaching experience for Fran bothers me a little bit as well. I give Forrest points for continuity, likely player retention, area recruiting, and for the likelihood of his turning NT into a long-term gig for himself. Not that Fran doesn't get any points in some of those areas too, but my gut feeling just leans toward Forrest.

I think I'm fully behind Fran getting hired... not only because of what he's done as a coach and his possible recruiting ties... but because of the possible new slogans...

So Frasch and so clean... anybody?

Mean Green, the Frasch-makers....

Frasch Prince of NT?

some sort of Creme Frasch reference... it hasn't fully come to me yet...

his first recruiting class would be full of Frasch-men...

anybody else?

What the Frasch are you talking about?

Fran edges out Coach Forrest by a nose in my book. I would be happy with either one as I think they would be able to keep all the current players and continue to build the program.

The more I google Fran, the more concerned I get with how things went down at St Johns and New Mexico. Had 9 players leave at NM, the mysterious departure form StJ. Supposed verbal abuse at both. Someone please talk me through this.

I wouldn't worry about it. He didn't leave because of NCAA violations. Players leave programs all over the country. Also, he had no problems at Manhattan. I would not worry about it as you have to trust RV to vett all of that and have enough oversight (as with ALL of our coaches) to see that it does not get out of hand and cross the line. JJ was no angel at practice as Tyler Hall even referred to him as "Coach Loco" because of his yelling when he spoke at the bb banquet.
