That's a pretty myopic viewpoint. So you think a quarter of a billion dollars raised in five years in "par for the course" at SMU? Its the largest and most ambitious fundraising and capital improvement effort in the history of the university. But I get it. Haters gotta hate.

Thank you for proving his point. This thread is about the SMU hire of Larry Brown as basketball coach...and by extension whether or not this will lead to the ponies tidying up the sewer that is the men's basketball program. Your main bullet point? Fundraising and SMU's endowment. Now why would you avoid discussing the subject at hand? Hmmm

And I don't know this for sure as I am a man, but most women I've spoken to tell me that those who make reference to their endowment are compensating for something. Just sayin.

If SMU is raising all this money then more power to them. I for one do actually think the Larry Brown hire could be ok for them for the short term at least. Also I'm sure SMU has a bright future ahead of them...we do as well...and I bet every other school in the country will tell you the same thing. SMU2006, your original post definitely didn't scrutinize us which I appreciate as you're probably a good dude in person but I surely wouldn't call us haters...at the end of the day none of that capital campaign stuff really matters in what an alum from a particular school can do with their life.

I'm certainly on the fence with the Larry Brown hire, but you can't deny that there are more people talking/interested in SMU hoops in the last week than in the previous six years under Doherty. Also, if Brown can get the staff that is rumored (Jankovich as HWIC, Rod Strickland, Jorrance Howard, and Eric Snow) then we will see what kind of hire this will be. Brown has said he has been getting calls day and night from coaches who want to be a part of his last coaching staff as SMU transitions to the Big East. The first couple of years are gonna be lean but if Brown's staff can recruit then maybe this will be a good thing.

Either way what is going on at SMU is truly remarkable. 1.3 billion endowment, moving to a BCS conference, 40M renovation to Moody, indoor practice facility for football,an inner circle of alumni that allow us to pay top dollar for the best coaches/facilities in the nation, etc. I know there are a lot of people here that hate SMU for a variety of reasons, but SMU has never had a brighter future. I was fortunate enough to attend the Founder's Day celebration this weekend to get an update on the Second Century campaign which is the biggest and boldest fundraising endeavor that the univeristy has ever undertaken. It was a pretty awe-inspiring experience to see what SMU is working on.

Enjoy your 72 year old head coach who has had major NCAA violations at every college coaching stop, but, hey, you guys are used to that, right? It's kinda like Penn St. hiring a registered sex offender as head football coach, don't you think?

Enjoy his replacement, an ex-UNT coach who didn't have near the success of Johnny Jones, who most of you didn't deem worthy of an interview.

Enjoy 15 minutes of publicity that will be buried by 3 more years of terrible basketball. Maybe after that (and the inevitable probationary period), you guys will get around to hiring a real basketball coach.

A turd is a turd, whether you crapped it out or paid 2 million a year for it. Congrats on your turdilicious purchase.
