UNT SIgnees Selected for All Star Games

UNT will be well represented this summer at the Texas High School Coaches Association All-Star games.

Clarke Overlander of Argyle will play for the North in the all-star basketball game that will be played on July 30 at St. Mary's University in San Antonio.

Defensive lineman Dylan McDorman of Wichita Falls and Dutton Watson of Midland will play for the North in the football game the following night at the Alamodome.

I still wonder why McDorman was grayshirted. He looks like one of the best of the class and although it is a small risk, he could still go elsewhere. Hopefully, we get to see Overlander play a true guard in the game; looking forward to see his play away form the basket.

Right. A ship is open for him, but per NCAA rules we can only bring on 25 new players this year. So unless one of the incoming freshmen don't make it, then all of the 25 ships for this year's incoming freshman class are full.

Sometimes there is no choice but to Grayshirt and to the benefit of the athlete to do so.

Your explanation is dead on. They can enroll in any school on a part time basis meaning they cannot take more than 9 hours.

The best players usually don't want to get hurt so they don't play. Or it is who daddy knows to get them in the game. Or who their head guy knows.

Actually it is the schools that recruited them that discourage participation. In the old days, the roster was dominated by recruits to the power schools; now there are usually very few. They can't forbid their recruits from playing but they don't encourage it. While the lower tier schools are mostly just happy to get the publicity. Also this particular all star game mandates a number of players are chosen from all divisions of Texas HS football which eliminates some of the better players and increases the number of smaller colleges represented. I can remember NT having as many as 6 on the teams and a lot of years with no representatives.

Most all star games and all state teams are political in the sense that the players have to be nominated usually by their coaches. Some do a good job of it, others do nothing.

I watch it when I'm at coaching school bc we get in free, but honestly the product isn't very good. At this point it's more about getting named to the team.
