Sunday night coach search update

I spent some time today talking with sources who have insight into UNT's search for two new basketball coaches.

I mentioned that Long Island coach Gail Striegler was supposed to talk to UNT over the weekend. Lynn Bria of Stetson was in town last week, but it doesn't look like she will be UNT's next coach.

The new name out there is Wake Forrest head coach Mike Petersen. He just finished his eighth year at the school. He was the head coach at TCU from 1996-99, the same time that UNT athletic director Rick Villarreal worked at the school.

It would be an interesting move, leaving Wake Forrest for UNT, especially after a 20-win season. He would fit the profile UNT is looking for with a proven coach, though.

With UNT now also looking for a men's coach, the school will likely move pretty quickly on the women's job.

Central Arkansas coach Matt Daniel and Oral Roberts coach Jerry Finkbeiner are still names to keep in mind.

The UNT men's job will be a highly sought after one. Johnny Jones built a great program and left a stacked roster for next season.

His teams are basically .500 in ACC games but he's always around 20 wins on the season.

That's the biggest knock on him, together with a barely-above winning career percentage.

But he killed it at NMSU, rocked the OOC at Wake and took them into the polls while in the shadow of the ACC heavyweights. This may not be a knockout hire some had hoped for (was there one?), but I find it difficult to be unhappy about a guy we stole from the ACC.

I agree. Like McCarney at Iowa State, Peterson was fighting an uphill battle at Wake Forest.
