Assuming LSU has any basketball fans left — and their apparent boycott of the recent SEC tournament in New Orleans would cast some doubts — they will now all (both of them?) be making their lists and tweeting them twice for a new coach.

The message boards will be full of it, and in more ways than one.

They can wish and hope and dream all they want.

In the end, it will be up to Athletic Director Joe Alleva, and it appears he will go it alone.

This is viewed as good news, at least if social media can be believed, as Alleva is rumored to be well connected among the college basketball elite.

After all, in his former life he was athletic director of basketball royalty at Duke.

I’m not sure, exactly, how that job prepares one for a basketball coaching search.

I mean, how many AD headaches did he have at Duke? His head coach was Mike Krzyzewski — Alleva, unlike me, can spell Mike’s name without looking it up. He didn’t really need to keep a list of potential names in his top right-hand drawer, always at the ready just in case.

Now, here he is just four years at LSU, and already he’ll have led two more basketball coaching searches than he ever even contemplated with the Blue Devils.
