UNT making do with what it has on offensive line

Cyril Lemon hobbled around on crutches Saturday morning during North Texas’ first workout of spring practice in pads and had a little company on the sideline.

Boone Feldt, Ryan Rentfro and Connor Trussell were all standing just a few yards away, watching the rest of the offensive linemen who will be their teammates in the fall go through drills.

UNT head coach Dan McCarney is confident those players will help the Mean Green down the line.

UNT is counting on that and the development of a few players in spring practice to help rectify one of its biggest issues on the roster at the moment: a severe lack of depth on its offensive line.

“I don’t know if I have ever been this thin, when you go to practice and have 10 offensive linemen,” McCarney said. “We lost some guys to graduation and lost some guys to attrition when we got here in the off-season from the offensive line.”

Matt Tomlinson, arguably UNT’s best offensive lineman, has graduated, along with J.J. Johnson, one of the Mean Green’s most experienced players.

UNT has some players for workouts. It just doesn’t have enough of them, at least not yet.
