The back story on Tulsa basketball is that they dropped their women's program after the 1986-87 season. They resurrected it again in 11 years later in 1997-98. McConnell-Miller, then aged 31, was hired four season later for the 1999-2000 season and stayed until being hired away by Colorado following the 2004-2005 season.

It goes without saying, then, that she is Tulsa's all-time winningest women's basketball coach. She led the program to two WNIT appearances. At CU, she took a program that had sunk to 9-21 under a longtime coach, and built it to a WNIT qualifer.

Although her overall record at CU was only 65-88, she was 20-60 in the Big 12, which was full of perennial national powers Oklahoma, Texas A&M, and Baylor. Basically, she was rebuilding a program in a very potent shark tank.

My guess would be that having been through WAC competition when Louisiana Tech was still highly ranked, then going through the annual buzzsaw of Oklahoma, Texas A&M, and Baylor, she'd probably be able to handle Sun Belt competition.

The only question might be money. CU was paying her almost $400k. We were paying Aston about half of what McConnell-Miller was making with the Buffs.

But, as I contended all along in football, coaches are competitive and like to coach. Kevin Kokjohn told Dan McCarney at the Plano coaches caravan that I'd mentioned his name as a coach a couple of year before, McCarney said to me, "Well, why didn't you say something two years ago?"

I did! But, Rick was tied up with Dodge Mania.

Coaches like to coach. My guess is, McConnell, who roots are more in college basketball, would forsake the WNBA assistant role and at least give us a look.

At 43 going on 44, there's still many years left in McConnell's tank. Hopefully, she can fill it here.
