Wondering where UNT is going to get those extra scholarships to cover all the players who have committed over the last few days?

Well, UNT is going to grayshirt three players: Tyler Chapel Hill running back Andrew Tucker, Wichita Falls defensive lineman Dylan McDorman and Corsicana wide receiver Christian Hines.

Was kind of hoping McDorman would see some time as a true freshman in a position of need. Seemed he had the size and creds to contribute as a true Frosh. Maybe others are coming along better than we are aware. Hope so.

Edit: Beat me to it, H-Town

I wonder on what basis these three were determined to be the ones "grayshirted"?

All three of these committed some time ago - Tucker in May or June or so - Hines supposedly at the beginning of the 2010 high school football season - and McDorman quite a while back.

I am sure they agreed to this arrangement but, personally, I would be less-than-happy to see those who have committed over the past few weeks get scholarships for fall 2012 and I would have to "grayshirt".

No, the 250lb DT is McDorman, and he is greyshirting.

The 290lb DT is Sir Calvin Wallace...he is not grey shirting

Actually, McDorman is around 290, and I assume the 250 pounder he was referring to was Mustafa Haboul (actually 240 lbs).

I was hoping Hines could come in and contribute right away. That a number of reaasons why these three were selected over the others. Hopefully we'll get the answer tomorrow.

I think greyshirting is interesting because you're taking scholarships from next year to use this year. I guess maybe the "one in the hand" idea at work?

My thoughts exactly. I would hope that recruiting continues to improve year after year, yet all you're doing to limiting what you can do next year. One would hope that we win 8+ games next year and are able to get better recruits. Not sure I'm on board with this

At least one of our recruits has not even tested high enough on entrance exams to be eligible. Perhaps others are also risks to never even make an appearance on UNT's campus. Remember the LB now playing for Houston that everyone got so excited about? Signed a letter, couldn't get eligible, and had to go the Juco route.

I think there is a chance that 3 of the recruits never make it to UNT (Alonzo Horton, anybody??). If so, this allows the coaches an insurance policy and the ability to take a risk on a talented kid that other, bigger programs don't need to take.

Don't forget, scholarships are renewable on a year to year basis.

Smart recruiting.

Agree. Some of these that look like head scratchers to us could, and probably do, have back stories that do not have anything to do with need/ability in 2012. Would love to see all three on the field at some point for sure, though!

When these kids greyshirt, does that mean when they join the team for spring ball they are considered to have used their redshirt already?

Grey shirts don't enroll Full Time until the Spring Semester and that is when the eligibility clock starts ticking (5 years to play 4) so No, they still are available for Redshirt anytime during those 5 years.

Don't we have a small Senior class this year ? If so, it makes sense to bump some from this class back into next year's. That's probably why we had so many redshirting from 2011 back into this year, to give that flexibility.

At least we aren't doing what a bunch of the SEC teams do (LSU in particular).

They take away a scholorship from a senior to give to a freshman hoping the senior will just go away.
