With Evans committing to AF I'm interested to see who they have or even if they sign one at all. I think you need to sign a QB in every class but I would prefer they didn't if they don't see value out there.

While I agree that one QB a class is a good idea, I do see this next class as having 2 or 3. We have Derek T this year and next. If they sign in the 2013 class, they could redshirt for DT's Senior year, and then take the reins and start the new era.

I know I know, nobody likes what we have behind DT for "if" or "when" he goes down. I have a strange feeling that McNulty and Osborn will provide a better supporting cast if it should come to that this coming year. We'll see I guess.

Plus, the wild card of Cooper Jones. Nobody seems to know what this kid is at this point. Hopefully our o-line can continue to gel and protect better and better. Maybe being the UNT quarterback won't be so dangerous this next year. I can't wait to see.

I don't mean to brag... but I've run quite a few Franchises on NCAA 11... so I'm kind of an expert when it comes to this 'recruiting' thing and let me assure you, UNT will be fine if they don't have a QB in this class, it just boosts the interest of next year's QB's with the enticing thought of playing sooner...

Did any other QB's visit besides Evans? I sure hate losing him to Air Force, but I can't blame a young man for attending a service academy. What's the status of Williams out of Lake Dallas? I think he's the next Seneca Wallace.

At this point, I don't think we need to worry about what year of QB we get whether its a freshman or transfer.

As long as they are ready to compete for a 2nd string position because we diddn't have one who could handle the reigns of that last year.

We dont have a good track record of keeping QB healthy for a full season but this past season was improved with a great young OL.

Still, we need a QB that can compete with DT because Osborn and McNulty were 3rd string quality as best.

That's a valid point. Having Thompson, McNulty and Jones in the mix could be a deterrent to PT although if Jones is not playing QB I wish they would make it official so we know one way or the other...

Personally, I'd prefer we sign 2-3 QBs each and every season. Why? Because you can never have too many QBs on your roster (as experience has taught us) but, and more importantly, because HS QBs are generally pretty good overall athletes and can easily adapt to another position. This is especially true with the the 2* and 3* QB we're able to recruit but it's a common occurrence at Top 25 BCS programs too.

What's the worst that can happen if you have too many QBs on the roster? An experienced, returning starter can suddenly give up football altogether or transfer to an FCS school? Check and check.

Mike Canales is going into his third year here. My hope was that he'd have had more influence in bringing some QBs on board.

Obviously, nothing is guaranteed in recruiting and even the best recruiters lose some. I just don't think QB was an area where we had an immediate need. And, we have a couple of guys on the roster with real game experience.

I think maybe recruits can see they weren't going to just walk in here and start. We don't want prima donnas.

If everything goes according to Hoyle, once Thompson graduates, Osborne, McNulty, and Jones will have three years in Canales system and one will be ready to step into the starting role in 2013.

That said, I think we need at least one next year for depths' sake. We've got depth now.

I watched Jones and McNulty toss the ball to each other on the sidelines numerous times this past season. If Jones is going to another position but McNulty isn't, then someone needs to have their head examined. Jones' arm looks alot better to my untrained eye than McNulty's does.

You never know when your 1st, 2nd, or 3rd team quarterback could go down in the same season. It happened to us, it happened to the Houston Texas. We should be looking for a good FBS QB to sign. Would it hurt to have the 2nd coming of Giovanni Vizza on the sidelines next to Canales? Without all the problems, of course.

Maybe, but did you get a look at Jones' dad?

I agree with Buff. Derek has had his share of injuries and McNulty runs the ball a lot so he will be in danger of injury as well. Those are the only two that have garnered significant playing time.

DG, old news to most veteran posters here but new to newcomers who have recently joined GMG.com but back in the vaults of Mean Green football history, North Texas beat the University of Tennessee Volunteers with our 3'rd string QB back in the day.

What may be even more interesting to some of our newcomers, too, is the fact that that was a UT Vols team that had won 6 games that season and would have been a bowl team in today's NCAA.

This puts next year's recruiting of a QB in the "must do" department.

GMG!
