It's not just a situation where the sports staff picks a guy and names him the winner. The award ceremony, as one local principal recently told me, is quite the "to do." It's a big deal. I realize I'm slightly biased, as someone who still helps at the station, but hear me out. The station's players of the week from all season, as well as its nine finalists, were invited to a banquet where the winner was named. There were highlight reels, profiles, stories and, more impressively, a collection of football stars. Many of the honorees will continue playing football on Saturdays and possibly even Sundays.

This year's finalists included Jeffrey Hall (St. Charles Catholic), Devon Breaux (Donaldsonville), Tom Bove (Parkview Baptist), Landon Collins (Dutchtown), Tyre Bracken (White Castle), Jamaal Lofton (Woodlawn), Jairus Moll (West St. John), Mark Lewis (Livonia) and Mike Henry (Episcopal). From the University of North Texas to BCS winner Alabama, each of the nine players has plans to play college football next year.

Kind of an ouch there, if you take that statement the way I did. Kind of like, "From toilet scrubbers to the king, all walks of life are represented."

Yep, that's the way I read it, also.

Hopefully we do something about it soon.
