For most of his freshman season at North Texas, Trey Norris has been the one newcomer who has been easy to forget.

Tony Mitchell played for the U.S. national team over the summer and grabbed all the headlines. Chris Jones and Jordan Williams started from Day 1 and were among the top freshmen in the Sun Belt Conference.

Forrest Robinson drew a lot of attention because it’s hard to miss a 6-10 player with his potential.

And then there was Norris, the backup point guard who was always solid, but never really spectacular, when he was on the floor.

Heading into a 7 p.m. game against Denver today, the ball-handling backup has suddenly become the center of attention.

UNT will be without Jones and Williams the rest of the season after they failed to meet academic requirements.

Norris will take Jones’ place in the lineup and will have to play a key role if the Mean Green is to regroup and make a run at a sixth straight 20-win season.

“It motivates me a lot,” Norris said of being UNT’s forgotten freshman. “I knew that my time would come. I can run a team as well as anyone. I can come in, run the offense, get everyone in the right spot and help us win.”

Though clearly they will struggle without their leading scorer, is it possible this will be a more even, better team effort with a pure point guard instead of one that is taking a lot of shots?

That would be ideal!

(Unless Trey decides to score and erupts nightly for 20+ points)

Mitchell is the leading scorer actually.

Per game average? I believe you. Season? CJ, right? As in the person who as scored the most points for the team on the year.

Yeah, but usually when the term "leading scorer" is used, it's points per game not total points.

I get your point. But I will point out that MGS has them both at 14.1 per game. Now after tonight, that obviously goes up for Mitchell.

MGSports rounded up. Mitchell was averaging exactly 14.1 a game before tonight. CJ was at 14.053 a game.
