David Busby -- the cornerback/safety from Coppell who I talked to today about committing to UNT -- had something really interesting to say about what the Mean Green's staff told him about the school's future.

He said it could include joining Conference USA.

I didn't even broach the subject. Just threw out the last question I always ask -- "Were there any other factors that were an important part of why you decided to commit to UNT?"

You never know. Sometimes you find out something new.

Busby said UNT's coaches told him that the school could join Conference USA soon.

i would hope that recruits are not looking at UNT because we "could" be in CUSA soon. we just as well "could not". from every thing i have read[retired, recovering from total knee replacement revision surgery, too much time on my hands, etc.] the objective of creating a new conference is to void existing CUSA and MWC t.v. contracts and beat the Big East to the punch in negoiations for a new one.down side is that the new "continential conference" will give up automatic NCAA post season bids in all other sports for a few years[i can't remember exactly how many]. sixteen schools with 2 divisions, football championship game and basketball tourny is a good number. i would think it expands only if the new conference's t.v. partner thinks there is increased value by adding schools such as Temple,FIU,La.Tech,UNT,etc.,and is willing to pay more. if they are not,why share t.v. revenue with a school that does not increase the value of the conference? just an old mans opinion.

Mac is smart. I'd wager it's more of a: "Hey look recruit. We have a gorgeous $78million stadium that was built by the same people that designed and built Cowboys stadium. It's as nice as any college stadium out there. We have an awesome state of the art athletic center smack dab in the middle of an Olympic style athletic village. We have a staff with serious skins on the wall. This program and this university have made a serious commitment to football excellence. You can see it everywhere. And you better believe with all the conference realignment that has been happening CUSA has taken notice too. And it's not too far fetched to think they may come calling if they need a new school."

Kinda like the ugly chick in junior high who blossoms the summer leading into her first year of HS. All of her junior high friends realize she's no longer the ugly duckling but they still see her in that light because that's how they've always known her. But now in HS one of the upper classmen has taken notice, word gets out that he thinks she's cute. That's it. He never asks her out but because someone that was a junior or senior said she was cute all the freshman guys go gaga over her. Or something to that effect.

That's just my take.

I don't care what makes them look at UNT... if Mac brings in better recruits without directly lying to them, I'm all for it!

I am not sure Vito should have reported this at all. I can't imagine that Mac and our coaches are pleased that Busby told this to Vito, and you can bet they don't like Vito reporting it.

Sorry but Vito is just doing his job. He didn't even bring up the subject! You can't be "selective" in reporting and do your job!

So he has to report everything that is said? Is there not such a thing as editing? I think the usual "I am looking forward to playing at North Texas blah blah blah" would have sufficed. Common sense and responsible journalism. Oh, those don't exist anymore.

Vito reports what he finds and can verify. I'm surprised at someone suggesting covering up reporting from about NT athletics. First there are complaints about not having enough publicity and now there are complaints about too much!

Hiding facts is not "responsible journalism." Lying about what a reporter is told is not "responsible journalism." Leaving out the most important comment made during an interview is by no means exercising "common sense."

why would you want to read stories that just have the same 'blah blah blah' in them all the time?

Vito is not paid by UNT, he reports what he finds new and interesting about the subject he is covering... if a student says this, then what is the problem with putting it in the paper?
