Scheduling Problem

Recommended Posts

Can't help but wonder if the front loaded schedule of road games and constant traveling wasn't a huge factor in the academic problems of jones and Williams.

I even braught this up to a bball staffer during the string of road games and he said it was tough on them, especially it being their first semester on campus and all.

Not giving an excuse as much as questioning the schedule makers for that philosophy with such a freshman loaded team.

Very valid point made here.

Yea, I'll buy that. I thought the same thing, so I did a little research yesterday.

They started school in august. Games started in Novemeber, that's 2 months worth of classes that they had time to get used to. Then I started the basketball season and found out what days we had away games on. Throughout the first semester they missed give or take anywhere from between 7-10 days of school depending on the travel days. That's a week and a half to 2 weeks of school days.

Also, Tyler had mentioned twice that he had group projects that he was in cali for that his peers gave him 0's for because he wasn't there to participate. I kinda felt bad for him.

These are freshmen we are talking about. I'm not saying it's an excuse for doing poorly or that the academic advisors shouldn't have kept a closer watch on them, but damn. You take a kid and move him away from his parents for the first time, tell him to play basketball and excuse him from 1/8 of his classes and throw in thanksgiving break and bam! This is habit forming.

Stop making excuses, look at the tennis team and other minor sports who travel and are gone much more than Basketball and do not get to travel as plush as Basketball with their flights and buses. These other athletes seem to do just fine as freshmen and all somehow maintain 3.0+ GPA's as a whole team.

My only argument to this is that and I don't know for sure but don't teachers have sort of a different schedule timeline/syllabus for student athletes since they take into consideration they have a lot of responsibilities with travel, practice, games etc? While it is a possibility I can't fully buy it as an excuse for not making a C.

That seems pretty harsh on the teacher's part, but doesn't surprise me.

Wasn't a lot of the scheduling done several years ago? I don't think that they planned to travel a lot for a freshman heavy team, it just happened.

You might be thinking of football.

There are some games that are agreed to in principle. UTA every year is an example. The dates are less firm.

The tournaments are a little more firmed up in advance as well. I was hearing rumblings of the cali tournament shortly after Hot Springs last year, if I remember correctly.

But for the most part, dates and teams are subject to change until just up to the last minute in most cases. I understand LSU wanted to move up the game against us so they would not have to deal with Tony Mitchell, but don't know how accurate that was/is.

No excuses for these two guys, but I know for a fact that some schools try and route their star athletes to "athletic friendly" professors whenever possible. Maybe an area where we have room for improvement.

question is did the players attend class, and just not "get it", or did they not attend class, and just busted out. also, is the reason that they chose UNT in the 1st place is that we accept players with "marginal" academic qualifications?i don't know that we do. just asking, not trying to blow someones skirt up.

--- I have college athletes at times in my class.... Most profs will work with those students... maybe they did get an unfair prof or at most two.... but they aren't gone because of ONE class. I do feel sorry a bit for basketball players... their season appears in two semesters and have a lot of mid-week games... not true much of football and most other sports although golf can get ridiculous .... multi-day tournaments and not locally.

--- When I was at TxTech I (several years ago) I had several football players [3-4 ] in my class and failed one... The athletic dept. called me and after I rattled off all the days he was absent and his test grades... they said ok ... and he was history. Another one in the same class made one of the few A's. Some just don't get it .... and some of them work very hard.

I don't remember where I saw this but the universities bend over backwards to help these students. I saw this story a few years ago.

For the basketball players during a tournament, if a player had a test, there would be a student assistant to administer the exam in a meeting room for the player. There is no reason to miss a test.

For road games, players are going to miss some class time because of travel. They are still responsible for the material they miss in class.
