Former University of Memphis assistant Darrell Dickey, who had several successful seasons as head coach at the University of North Texas, is returning to the U of M.

According to sources familiar with the process, Dickey, 52, is expected to join the Tiger football program as offensive coordinator and running backs coach. Also being added to new coach Justin Fuente's staff will be Brad Cornelsen, who will work with the Tiger quarterbacks. Both hires are subject to approval by the Tennessee State Board of Regents.

The additions of Dickey and Cornelsen will leave Fuente with one opening: defensive line coach. Fuente's previously announced hires are Vance Vice (offensive line), Holman Wiggins (wide receivers), James Shibest (tight ends/special teams), Barry Odom (defensive coordinator/safeties), Chris Vaughn (cornerbacks) and Galen Scott (linebackers).

Dickey, a Kansas State quarterback in the early 1980s, will be familiar to longtime Tiger football fans. He was a member of former Tiger coach Charlie Bailey's staff in the late 1980s, joining the program in 1986 as running backs coach. He was promoted to offensive coordinator the following season and remained at Memphis through 1989. During Dickey's tenure the Tigers posted two of the program's biggest wins, upsets of Florida and Alabama.
