As Michigan and Virginia Tech strutted their hours on the Sugar Bowl stage Tuesday night, leaving the states of Idaho and Kansas to fret and fuss, it wasn't hard to envision the future of BCS football.

A future, some gush, without borders. Without conference realignment nightmares.

A future without automatic qualifiers.

A brilliant idea, many are thinking and saying. After all, 90 percent of the complaints about the Bowl Championship Series probably come from the 5 percent of schools, fans and alumni who think their team got unfairly ignored.

Not surprisingly, two commissioners from the non-auto-qualifying hinterland -- Craig Thompson of the Mountain West Conference and Britton Banowsky of Conference USA -- have stepped forward to support the rumored plan to end AQs.

But no sooner did Thompson's and Banowsky's justifiable reactions hit the news pages, we also heard from -- cue the evil-sounding chamber music -- Jim Delany, czar of the Big Ten.

Delany said he loves that Thompson and Banowsky will no longer be banging on the BCS door.

The problem, of course, is what Delany said isn't really what the two other commissioners meant. Delany knows what a BCS without automatic conference tie-ins would look like.

It would look like Tuesday night's Sugar Bowl. The BCS bowl city's hotel rooms would be filled, its restaurants would be solidly booked, the two schools' fight songs would always sound like oldies-but-goodies, and a team from the Big East or MWC would never play in a BCS bowl again.

Ok, so no outsiders in the big bowls like back in the day. You know, the day. Like the good ole days of 1984 when lowly BYU won the national championship playing in the lowly Holiday bowl. Oh. Yeah. That was the single event that really drove the big boys to circle the wagons. Couldn't let a no name joint like BYU ever win a championship again. BCS, no BCS. Playoff, round robin, random selection. The big boys will always be the big boys, and they will always push the newcomers off the hill.
