If you followed Morris Redskins basketball over the years, most remember the great teams and the great players .

One of the very best basketball cagers at Morris was Jim Struck. Jim was a standout for the Redskins in the '60s and later played college ball at North Texas State.

The conversation moved around to his career at North Texas State.

Jim commented, "I was very fortunate to get a four-year ride to the school. I had some other offers, but North Texas was my strongest one. At the time what really steered me to that school was the conference we played in, the Missouri Valley Conference. From 1967 through 1971, we played against Louisville, Cincinnati, Drake, Memphis State and Bradley to mention some schools. I played against Wes Unseld, Butch Beard and others."

Struck sounded like a heck of a player. Man I would have loved to have been old enough to have seen some of those Mo Valley games back then, and some of the great times had at the snake Pit.

I've heard so much about them over the years from so many alumns from that era that I feel like I truly missed out on some great times. Does anyone know if there is game film from that era still available?

Rick, you would have been in Mean Green heaven at the old pit. If you were calm when you got there you were nervous wreck when you left. It was a terrible venue for the visitors and the accommodations for the fans were terrible. We loved it, however. The sign I did for the last home game at the old pit says it all...."Ain't a team come to Denton who can ever forget 'bout them three month nights in the nasty ole pit." It was featured on the sports on channel 11 that night.

Agree 100% drex. Anyone who was lucky enough to experience the old pit and the MVC days is a lucky Mean Greener indeed. I still have great memories of that place actually vibrating with the noise...packed to the gills and loud as all get out. NO team wanted to come to the UNT Pit to play...Great stuff...great memories.

While the Super Pit is fine, it cannot hold a candle (yet) to the atmosphere created by playing to packed houses in that old Pit. Be still my heart!
