Beat me to the punch, I was about to post my list on here last night. My 10:

1. Yuck - Yuck. I generally don't fall for bands playing to the feelings of yesteryears, but I loved the 90s dammit.

2. The Drums - Portamento

3. Neon Indian - Era Extrana. I have a picture with Alan Paloma during their last show in Denton @ Hailey's club. You could say we're bff's.

4. Cymbals Eat Guitars - Lenses Alien

5. Washed Out - Within and without

6. Girls - Father, Son, and Holy Ghost

7. M83 - Hurry up We're Dreaming - I really don't like this album as much as Saturdays = Youth, but I really like some tracks on here. Maybe my anticipation for this album has me liking it more than I should.

8. Destroyer - Kaputt.

9. Real Estate - Days

10. The Antlers - Burst Apart.

That Party Rock song was pretty good. I like the Kia commercial.

Also, you accidentally left Whitesnake's comeback album off your list.

+1 for That Party Rock song, w/ the Whitesnake mention getting a LOL +1.

I was a big fan of the Foster the People album...I bought that thing before their popularity skyrocketed.

I'm not sure if this was 2011 or 2010 for sure but Fitz and the Tantrum's album called pickin up the pieces is pretty solid as well.

Never heard of any of these musicians, except for Whitesnake.

They must not be very good.

When it comes to music preferences, to each their own. But I don't understand this logic. I've heard of Whitesnake too, and they're horrible. Nickelback? P Diddy? Yeah, all horrible.

My generational sarcasm musta went right by you.

Now that the year is officially over, it feels more appropriate to post a top 10 list.

Smashing Pumpkins: Gish / Siamese Dream (Deluxe Edition reissue)

Weezer: Pinkerton (15th anniversary Deluxe Edition reissue)

Radiohead: Kid A (10th anniversary Special Collector's Edition)

Beastie Boys: Ill Communication (Deluxe Edition reissue)

Nirvana: Nevermind (20th anniversary Deluxe Edition)

Pearl Jam: Ten (20th anniversary reissue)

Goodie MOB: Soul Food (15th anniversary reissue)

Also, the Whitesnake comeback album. And whatever album has that "Party Rock" song on it. That song is aces. I'm seriously considering buying one of those hamster Kias.

There's your year end top 10. I know that's only 9... But music was better when I was younger. Obviously.

Consider the empty 10th slot a constant reminder to everyone that things were better before, and anything you love now is pathetic.

Brant did make one damned fine album.

But, to that end...where in the world did you hear Brant's work? The sad truth is that most radio stations don't play good music so finding good music takes a bit of work. Word of mouth is huge...surround yourself with people with similar oracular tastes and there inevitably will be a music conversation had at some point. Its a big reason those of us who consider themselves really in to music put lists like this together...yes, in part its to say to other music-y people "hey, look at my great taste" but its also to open up a dialogue and find more good music...for example, I've had the Real Estate album on my radar for a while but didn't really give it a full listen until I saw it repeatedly suggested in this thread.

The internet is obviously a huge resource...music blogs, Metacritic, Pandora, pod-casts...

I'm also fortunate to have a really good NPR station, WFUV, in my area that plays a lot of really good new music that often falls into my listening spectrum. Austin also has a great NPR station, KEXP I believe.

If you seriously want some recommendations for really good new music, send me a list of your tastes and I'll gladly piece together a few suggestions.

Sirius XM.

Should also add that while they didn't make full-fledged albums, a couple of up & coming bands that caught my ear: Purity Ring and TV Girl. To teh google you go.

Gasp, hold on to your hats...Brant is a fraternity brother of mine in Sigma Chi. I bought his album without ever hearing a note to support his career and it has turned out to be one of my favorite albums.

That was my point...Brant is a friend of mine and I bought his album after hearing nothing but a few self-made youtube clips...one cleverly involving a bottle of Cholula Hot Sauce.

We, unfortunately, didn't buy his album after hearing a track on the local country radio station...though I hear he's getting some air-time on non-top 40 "country" stations around Texas. Good music, for the most part, doesn't get played on the radio anymore so it can take a bit more work to find quality tunes.
