Realignment Tidbit from the other Dan McCarney

Conference USA: An excellent source within the conference told me discussions about C-USA’s future will likely begin in earnest in January. There’s plenty to talk about, including how many schools it might want to add (if any) to replace Houston, SMU and Central Florida, and who those schools might be.

Should plans to merge with the Mountain West move forward, there might be no additions at all. But should C-USA decide to remain a separate entity, the source said, the addition of three schools for a total of 12 probably makes the most sense.

And here are some of the names you could — stress, could – start hearing (in no particular order): UTSA, Texas State, North Texas, Florida Atlantic, Florida International, Louisiana Tech and UNC Charlotte. The source also said the Ohio-based MAC schools could be considered based on their proximity to Marshall, and another source from outside the conference said Georgia State is also considering throwing its hat in the FBS ring.

To put these names into perspective, the source described this portion of our discussion as “throwing darts out.” So it’s nothing but speculation, from one person. But if you look at the factors of geography, market and/or on-field success, all make sense in their own way.
