Gaby Colunga commits to UNT Swim

North Texas, which only has a women's swim program, has made strides in recent years under head coach Joe Dykstra with three straight third-place finishes at the Sun Belt Conference Meet.

“North Texas has a good program and it's only going to get better,” Colunga said. “The team is amazing. Their swimmers are doing great at the meets. The coach is great, and I love how he runs the program. He personalizes the workouts for you. He focuses on what you need to do to get better.

“I love the campus. They have a great kinesiology department, which is what I want to study. I want to become a trainer or go into nursing some day, and being there is going to help me. I love everything about it.”

Colunga has given North Texas coaches reasons to feel excited. This past season, the Brandeis senior won the District 27-5A title in the 100-yard butterfly and finished second in the 200 freestyle to earn a trip to the Region 7 Meet.

She also helped Brandeis qualify for regionals with a silver medal in the 200 medley relay.

Colunga missed out on a 5A State Meet appearance after placing third in the 100 fly at the Region 7 Meet.
