BCS AQ Likely Gone per Brett McMurphy of CBS

NEW YORK – For all the critics of the BCS, rejoice: it appears that the BCS automatic qualifying status format will be gone in 2014.

At least that’s the indication that Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany and Conference USA commissioner Britton Banowsky gave during Thursday’s IMG Forum at the Marriott Marquis.

“Some of the people that don’t have (BCS AQ status), say they don’t want it,” Delany said. “Some of the people that do have it, don’t really care about it. Maybe it needs to be reconsidered. I’m not wed to it".

"I feel strongly it’s been a negative driver from our perspective,” Conference USA commissioner Britton Banowsky. “I hope to be involved in a BCS we do it in a way where we can create a more happy BCS without these class systems. I think it’s possible to do it. In a competitive format that requires teams to be competitive teams in order to participate.”

Yeah.. kill the BCS.. that will hurt the low level teams WAY more than help them. Now everything is in the hands of the bowls, who care mroe for TV revenue and the ability to fill a stadium than letting the low level school have a shot...

Some times people have to accept that there will never be a playoff and there are much worse alternatives to the BCS. Once the BCS gets killed, don't cry that the bowls are in effect excluding all the low level teams when there was a system in place that would at least give those teams a shot.

... except that it's been reported that they are considering more drastic changes to the bowl system. We'll see what happens but removing AQ status hopefully will just be a part of the changes.

What makes the NCAA BB tournament great is that the little guys have their shot and sometimes come through. A +1 or anything less than a sixteen team playoff system which first includes all conference winners is just another BCS in different clothing.

Exactly. Do you think Butler would even be INCLUDED in a BCS type scenario for college B-ball?

Imagine, the polls say OHSt. & Kansas are the best teams at the end of the year. They play each other for the national championship while several other high ranking AQ schools get paired up in 4 other meaningless games with good teams. Forget a team like UConn who finished 9th in their own conference with a .500 record! Make the standards incredibly hard for a Non-AQ team like Butler! Do you think March Madness would be anywhere near as cool? A Resounding No.
