Article talked about how CSU is going to cast a wide net for its football coaching search.

Graham, also a former CSU quarterback, said the school doesn't have the kind of money to lure a big-name coach, like Washington State did when it hired Mike Leach last week for more than $2 million a year. But some former head coaches of major college programs that might get a look from CSU include North Texas coach Dan McCarney, the former Iowa State coach; Texas State coach Dennis Franchione, a former head coach at Alabama, TCU, New Mexico and Texas A&M; or even Mike Sherman, who was fired last week after going 6-6 this season and 25-25 in four years at Texas A&M.

If I am them I'd also consider Dan Hawkins. I know he didn't do anything at Colorado but I think a non BCS program is probably more right up his alley since he did a hell of a job at Boise State.

Although you may be right, they would never live down hiring CU's "sloppy seconds". They would probably rather hire Todd Dodge than Dan Hawkins or any other fired CU coach.

This ain't intramurals brother!

I highly doubt he would jump from UNT to CSU

Why wouldn't he?

If the MWC-CUSA merger happens CSU could be in an AQ conference, they have good attendance and better pay in a nice local. I would love for him to stay but would be hard to turn down if offered.

CSU is not in an AQ conference, my guess is the money is not that far off and the most important reason he won't go is that after a winning season and bowl he will have an AQ offer and big bucks.

Just keep in mind this observation from KRAM1 in his post about the coach's show.

"I did feel a touch of frustration on Coach Mac's part last evening when he talked about attendance and specifically student attendance. he made the comment that he felt like he had done everything he could to engage the student body and to help get them interested in attending games. I sensed a bit of frustration on his part with the results and payback from the students for his and his team's efforts. He said it made a big difference to recruits when they visit to see a full stadium...it said it matters and while UNT set an all-time attendance record this season, he was hopeful that the UNT fan base and the student body would get behind the program and turn out in bigger and bigger numbers in the future."

See I can understand some frustration but certainly he knew what he was getting into right? I think its a weird thing to say knowing what kind of job was ahead of him as far as attendance. Unfortunately if he continues to improve the program and the attendance isn't rising as fast as he wants all of this could be ammunition in justifying for him to leave for a better program should that situation ever come.

No way the merger gets an AQ bid. I'm not sure why they would even form a larger conference since it won't get an AQ bid. Seems like a bunch of increased travel costs for nothing.

Under the circumstances I think he would be disappointed, he was out in the town gathering support, he had a brand new stadium to work with and attendance was not where it probably should have been with everything. Now did the AD just rest on their laurels with a new stadium and think it would sell itself to an apathetic fanbase? Maybe and hopefully that will change come 2012, but the blame can not be leveled on DMac for attendance as he went out and spoke to the students, alumni, and citizens. So I could see why he would be upset.

I've been expressing my concern about this very concept for some time.(Since this is the anniversary of Pearl Harbor) It would be like the U.S. military building all those aircraft carriers after the Pearl Harbor attack and hope that enough competent pilots would show up to fly the planes without doing much in the way of recruiting or training.

Totally agree. Coach Mac needed to meet with the groups and share his vision for North Texas football, but it CAN'T BE ALL ON HIM.

McCarney was no doubt aware of how big a challenge NT would be. However, after doing all you can to build excitement and a program and then facing the very disappointing crowd in your season finale has got to damper a lot of enthusiasm.

However, I don't think McCarney is the type to cut and run. He knows that leaving a job after a year would put a big stain on his resume and I think he will wait for a much better opportunity than Colorado State.

I think McCarney wants to build a program at NT and will do his best for at least 3 years. After a while though even Fry got tired butting his head against NT apathy. Everyone is blaming everyone for NT lack of support, but in the final analysis more people have to get involved with the program.

IMO, the administration has for the first time taking bold steps to build this program. I am not always a fan of the current AD department but there is a limit to what can be done. It is up to the fans which should include a much larger percentage of alumni, students, and Denton area supporters to move this program forward. I think support will build but I hope it will fast enough to keep and/or attract good players and coaches who want to be here; not just those with few other choices.

Agree. If he didn't know, he didn't do much homework. It will take years of him going on campus and trying to drum up support with the students coupled with winning seasons before that section is full for every game.

This. Coach Mac was no doubt aware of our low attendance--but that had been in a dump of a stadium, with little promotion, and teams that had won what, two home games in four years? -- with little hope of improvement. Now Coach Mac has maybe the best stadium of its size in the country, he has worked incessantly to get people to games, and he has provided more home wins in one year than in the past several years combined.

I see McCarney seeing this thing through 3 years if not longer. He is a builder of programs and he knows it will take a couple of years to make his mark. When he builds UNT he will be able to name his job in the Big 12, SEC or Big 10. That is 5 years down the road in my opinion.

Not just this board, Vito might hang himself.

Dead on.

Something tells me he has sent his resume to the Fort Collins Coloradoan with the caveat that he and Coach Mac are a package deal. ;)

Coach Mac aint leaving here for C St. #1- don't think they would be interested in a 5-7 Sun Belt coach. #2- don't think Coach Mac wouldn be interested in leaving for anything other than a fairly high profile job, and C. St. ain't that.
