Authorities have identified the man found dead Saturday in the Occupy Denton encampment on the University of North Texas campus as Darwin Cox, 23.

Cox, who was described as homeless by people who knew him through the Occupy Denton movement, was discovered unconscious about 5 p.m. Saturday in one of eight tents at the site.

UNT spokesman Buddy Price said Sunday that the cause and time of death were still unknown. Cox was not a UNT student, Price said.

Occupy Denton participants said Sunday that Cox liked to refer to himself as a “traveler” who made close friendships wherever he went, and that his death was to them like a death in the family.

A statement on the Occupy Denton blog said the group “will dearly miss him, and forever appreciate the fortune of having shared a space and time with our friend.”
