Denver is now 5-1 with their win last night on the road (!!!) over Utah State...a quality program for the last decade who looks to be having an off year thus far. Denver's one loss came at #18 Cal...and they've added a win over St. Mary's, a tournament regular...last year as an at-large(?) from the West Coast Conference. Denver is experienced...and deeper than in past years...and have gotten off to this good start despite the Hallam brothers, their 2nd and 3rd leading scorers from last season, off to slow starts.

Middle is now 6-1...their best win on paper is UCLA...in reality is probably Loyola Marymount. Their one loss came in double overtime to a good Belmont team...who they get to see again in a couple of weeks. MT is off to this good start despite leading returning scorer Jason Jones only playing in 3 games. Middle is big, deep and athletic...and the prospect still exists of 6'11" Torin Walker gaining his eligibility. This may well be the year Middle's talent surpasses Kermit Davis's propensity to over-coach.

I am definitely watching both of them. USA as well for that matter. However, we've seen belt teams get off to good runs in OOC before and struggle in league play.

They're definitely helping the RPI though.

Walker is eligible now (he was not our first 3 games). He's been injured with plantar fasciatus (sp?) since the beginning of the season. He is supposed to play tonight at Tennessee State. Coach says his conditioning (i.e. game shape) needs to improve.

I've heard he is an "average" player who will help out with some depth and defense, but that's about it.

When is your frosh stud's first game ?

12/18. I think we're hoping to have him at home against Jackson State and Grambling before we host LSU.

Do you expect Jason Jones to eventually move back into the starting line-up or do Hammonds, Massey and Knight have the 2-3-4 spots locked up? Also...what's the story with Cintron? I was following the Belmont game and he was money late in the second and in the OTs, but his minutes have seemed inconsistent.

Ooo, If it's plantar fasciitis there's a potential he might not be right for the whole season. It really just depends on the pain and there's always the constant threat of re-injury. It's tough to heal that up during the season.

Tennessee State is playing MT real close tonight.

It's always interesting to see those teams that start off with a real good streak hit some rough patches in the later half. We did it last year.

How much of it do you think is other younger teams, or teams with added components, turning the corner playing with each other, and catching up to the chemistry present on those veteran teams?

It's not that the team gets worse, or fades, it's just that so many other teams start figuring things out.

Jones will be in the starting lineup, but Hammonds will get plenty of action. Hammonds is out right now with a stress fracture. 3rd string point guard Jimmy Oden came in and scored 14 points for us tonight, so it just depends on the matchups, I guess. I don't think Kermit will solidy a starting five the entire year.

A guy I think who should be starting is Shawn Jones, who led the nation in blocked shots in high school. He is a big musular dude who looks like he can touch the top of the backboard.

Cintron I think will be more of a "spot" player. He is a bit slow (stocky) and he is turnover prone (but if he's on, he's on). He had a bad game tonight. Kermit will leave Cintron in after a few missed shots, whereas he used to yank our guys pronto-- so that's a good thing.
