We just got outplayed, out coached and out hustled. period. Damn shame cause we had a nice crowd that essentially had very little to cheer about. oh well it happens. GMG!

PS. We are young, still very talented and still have some guy named Tony

11 pages on two threads and this is the first time I've seen the coach held responsible for the loss in any of them.

Rick

The amount of times you've given JJ credit for wins without some sort of backhanded compliment is almost as rare.

BTW - the game thread had a few references to the coaching being partially to blame.

Thank you. At least you admit I compliment him outright more than he receives criticism from this board.

Actually, it's less. Especially since every freaking loss thread has complaints about coaching (as arguably they should), and often the wins ones do as well (and arguably they shouldn't).

Obviously just not as critical as you wish. But since you said that Harry's was the first post you read blaming coaching, I guess reading comprehension isn't your strong suit.

From tonight's game thread.

Defense is bad and coaching is worse.

If Johnny knew what to say he would call a time out - Not prepared by coach - players deer in headlights.

Wow, I hope this team realizes they need to do something different and fast, starting with coach JJ. This is absolutely embarrassing.

No, I didn't read through every page because after the first half I saw the same excuses over and over posted there and wasn't going to read any further. But since you mentioned it I did see Cooley say the coaching was poor, so I stand corrected.

Well, you said 11 pages on 2 threads, now didn't you?

If one of us had said something like that arguing against you, and later admitted they didn't read all of the pages that they insinuated they'd read, you'd be all over their ass.

It's the same excuses over and over again. Click on one page and see the same three more over. I missed three paragraphs out of 11 pages. Bad Rick.

You know, I never really give praise or criticize coaching on a game in game out basis. Especially not in a season with so many games. I might defend or try to rationalize a decision if pressed - but for the most part unless I feel something is totally egregious, there's probably a fairly good theory behind the move (like say the running debate all over college basketball on whether you foul the opponent up 3 at the end of the game).

I take a long view to coaches, i.e. season by season (or over many seasons as a cumulative). Coach Jones took awhile to get it going, but since 2007, he wins about two thirds of his games and has won 2 conference titles with a loss in the title game one time. If I recall, he has something like the 2nd or 3rd highest win percentage of any Sun Belt Coach ever in the conference tournament (and that includes his first few seasons where we were 1-5).

Looking at his career here, it is nothing if not noteworthy. Whether he retires here, moves elsewhere, or gets fired someday -- there is little question he is gonna be enshrined in our HOF. So, do I cut him some slack when others might not? I probably do, because I look at his trend line, not the blip of a single game(or even a streak of them).

I agree with Rick, it's much more fun to write things.

Look I agree this was a bad loss but it's not the end of the world. This team is super young and a bad losses were and are expected. Did I think it would happen against UTA and happen the way it did? No ofcourse not but it was just one of those effin nights. That's all you can really say about it. I'm confident JJ will do his 'stuff' to address this game and just move on. Who knows it could be possible the players are so embarassed that they have some anger in them that it lit some fire in their ass for the next game which happens to be MSU.

If we weren't the toast of the metroplex for going into LSU last season and beating them by 20, we're not the laughing stock of it now.

It was a an at large bid killing loss. Listening to New Mexico sports radio this past week they were desperate because they lost to NMSU at home in game 2. They knew they could not go into ASU and lose to the Sun Devils and still think realistically about getting a tournament bid. The MWC league is down this year with no BYU and Utah. Every game matters. I don't see the Mean Green often, but I have seen us play uninspired basketball against this team two years in a row. What happened last night simply cannot happen when we are the power of the metroplex. Standards Mean Green. Standards.

We have to win the league now after losing to Tech and UTA. Jones did not seem to have that team hungry to play last night. Just an observation from a distance.

Still GREEN but bummed. Will get over it soon!

Whenever I watch NT BB and they win I am astounded because they do not move the ball around with a collective purpose. That TT game was some of the worst basketball I have seen by two teams so this result didn't surprise me. I don't think I want to go next Tuesday.

Pretty clear we are not the most powerful team in metroplex college basketball this year. Almost the entire team is new and very young. We got beat by the best team in the metroplex, plain and simple.

JJ's offense is not predicated on ball movement. Never has been. It is a post up, beat your man offense, like it or not. These kids are athletic enough to succeed in that type of offense, just not experienced enough. Patience.

For the record, JJ has won two conference TOURNAMENT titles not two conference titles. In fact we have only had one season where we were in contention for the conference title and in all actuality won the the title except for stupid tie-breaking rules. Look at his overall conference record, i would bet it's not a whole lot over .500

For taking a long view, you sure put a lot of emphasis on a short term record (conference tournament record).

I can appreciate what JJ has accomplished here and i want him to stay but he's had way to many piss poor losses while he has been here and i don't blame fans for getting frustrated. If you can't bet frustrated and upset on a message board after getting clobbered by UTA by 30+ points, when can you get frustrated?

FWIW, JJ's Belt record going into past tourneys:

2010 - 2011 8-8

2009 - 2010 13-5

2008 - 2009 11-7

2007 - 2008 10-8

2006 - 2007 10-8

Prior to that, it is < 0.500.

I don't read anywhere on this board people trying to sanctify JJ; and those like Rick are not asking for him to be fired either.

When JJ is done at UNT, I wonder if we will look at his term in 3 different periods? Everything before 2006 looks at or just under 0.500. Then we have a great (or good, depending on who you ask) 5 year run, beginning the year before TT and Josh came in where we won those tourneys and got to the NCAA twice. This class could be the "next level" we are all hoping for: regular conference titles and 2 - 4 round run in the NCAA by 2014?

The UTA loss is frustrating and not how you want these guys to start. But if JJ's teams (or any opponents at Texas Hall) have taught us anything, it is that this loss means nothing except a few pulled hairs.

Most conferences recognize the conference champion as the tournament champion, and actually qualify regular season conference champion -- not the other way around. The ACC started this practice.
