Ty Nurse Story and Tech Injury Update

The highlights of Ty Nurse’s 29-point performance in Texas Tech’s 90-85 season-opening win against Troy on Friday were easy to pick out.

Whether the point guard was nailing a clutch 3-pointer as the shot clock expired, or chasing down a long rebound and taking the ball coast-to-coast for a momentum-seizing three-point play, most of Nurse’s big plays took center stage.

But coach Billy Gillispie said pegging Nurse’s most important contributions in the wire-to-wire victory required a closer inspection.

“Ty was consistent with his effort,” Gillispie said, “and if he wouldn’t have worked as hard to get the ball in, we wouldn’t have won the game.”

With Troy applying suffocating full-court pressure much of the game, and a number of Tech’s freshman guards still finding their feet in their college debut, Nurse’s simple — yet not always easy — act of getting open for an inbounds pass, and then advancing the ball past the timeline, helped Tech withstand the Trojans’ second-half surge.

I watched this game... and Troy's press became more and more effective as the game wore on... I wonder if JJ will take the same approach tonight.

One of my major criticism of JJ is that despite deep, athletic teams he rarely presses...I have a hard time believing with so many new faces that he's already implemented much in the way of full-court defense.
