Red Wolves have little Trouble with UNT

There was no letdown for Arkansas State on Saturday.

Coming off an 11-day break and in position to remain atop the Sun Belt Conference, the Red Wolves didn’t give in to rust or overconfidence. They rolled to a 37-14 victory against North Texas on homecoming in Jonesboro.

With the victory the Red Wolves secured bowl eligibility. ASU (6-2, 4-0) also improved to its best record through eight games since 1986 and has its first five-game winning streak since that same season.

“I was really pleased with the way our kids came out,” Coach Hugh Freeze said. “...I think the thing that impressed me most was the intensity level, and I was worried with the 11 days off – you aren’t sure how your kids are going to come out. We certainly preached all week long that we needed to prepare for this game just like we had prepared for all the others, and I think they got the message.”

ASU moved the football with ease, racking up 540 yards against the Mean Green. Quarterback Ryan Aplin threw for 322 yards and three touchdowns, completing 28 of 42 passes.

In what Freeze called the team’s best half of football, Arkansas State scored on five of six possessions to open the game. That gave the Red Wolves a 31-0 lead as they posted 365 yards, while holding North Texas to 82.
