Dan McCarney is really impressed with ASU's defense. What is it that makes the unit so good?

Coach McCarney has a good eye. After loads of offense last year, ASU's defense has performed surprisingly well and ranks No. 28 in the nation in total defense compared to No. 105 last year. The key has been the defensive line where the Red Wolves are loaded with depth and experience. ASU returns three of its four starters there, including a pair of seniors in tackle Dorvus Woods and end Brandon Joiner that are very difficult matchups. This unit's depth has really played a major factor in late-game success. The Red Wolves rotate as many as 10 players on the line, keeping them fresh and rested, so when the fourth quarter rolls around they are ready go to. ASU's D- line dominated FIU and ULM to end those games, literally deciding the difference. They are particularly good at stopping the run, too. Last year ASU gave up more than 200 yards a game on the ground but now only allows 114.7 to rank No. 26 nationally.
