"The theater of the absurd that is college football expansion got even more ridiculous Wednesday. After three U.S. senators, nine Big 12 Conference schools and one billionaire booster wrestled with whether West Virginia or Louisville should join the league, the result is expected to remain the same."

what a mess. i don't know who are bigger dummies, big 12 or big east. for chips to fall n.texas's way, we need for big 12 to stop at 10 teams. if they take both w.v. and u.ofl., why not take cincy and be done with it? and if they do take both w.v.and u.of.l.,why would s.m.u.,houston, etc. move to big east who will be left with u.con, ruckers, cincy, and s.florida. not exactly b.c.s. material, even if b.s.u.,navey,air force,c.f.u.,e.c.u., and temple join. i don't see any reason for s.m.u. to move if big east loses its a.q. status. in a perfect world the big 12 would take b.y.u. for football only and leave big east alone. however, if appears that is not going to happen. problem for big 12 is that big east will not release any schools for 27 months, which does not solve their 2012 scheduling problems if mizzou moves to s.e.c. unless they hold them captive for a year. you know, you just can't make stuff like this up. what a mess.

The Big East will not lose AQ status. I am not sure how this has gotten stuck into the collective mind of football fans, but...

THERE IS NO WAY the BCS strips the status of the Big East, even if the become the new C-USA. Why?

The Big East has the inside dope on the BCS scam, and if they get the boot then the ADs in the Big East will pull a Sammy "The Bull" Gravano and spill their guts and point their fingers in open court.

Second, there is no provision in the BCS agreement to strip AQ status from a league.

Third, ESPN has the contract for the BCS bowls and with the Big East. ESPN has a lot of influence in this landscape, and I am pretty sure they are not going cannibalize their ratings. They will use their influence to ensure the league stays in the BCS AQ scenario. The Big East is guaranteed to be an AQ league through the 2013-14 season. A lot can happen between now and then, but my bet is that Big East survives and keeps sending 4-loss teams to BCS Bowls.

hope you are right, but just because there are no provisions in b.c.s. to strip big east doesn't mean they will be included when contract run out. l.s.u. chancellor nailed it when he said at the end of the day there will be 2 conferences, e.s.p.n. and fox sports.

"The Big East presidents are scheduled to meet Tuesday in Philadelphia with Marinatto. It's possible they could give Marinatto the go-ahead to invite new members next week. :goodjob:

Presumably, the senators from Idaho and Colorado are not expected to intervene."

i think SGA EAGLE is on to something. the big east won't let pitt, s.u.,or anyone else leave for 27 months which assures their conference inclusion in b.c.s. at end of 2013/2014 season. good call!

The Big East could keep their AQ status as long as it exists if they could do one thing....arm twist Notre Dame into moving their football program into the conference where all of their other teams are. Promise them that they can keep their Irish network and also participate in the conference payout. According to reports, Notre Dame is beginning to mellow on staying independent so now is the right time to take their best shot. It would also give the Fighting Irish their best chance to win a conference championship and the automatic qualification. That's almost the same as it is now except that I believe that Big East conference members are given preferential treatment because of head-to-head play. It would definitely make the conference more attractive to conference members. It might keep West Virginia and Louisville from wanting to move.

I believe the powerful bloc of eastern sportswriters (who seemedly never give SBC's better football teams in years past a vote) and the courts will keep the Big East in the AQ business for a long time.

Is the NCAA wanting to be an Indian giver all of a sudden? I think the NCAA will work with the Big East to help them out just fine..................IMHO, of course.

---What a mess..... regional/conference loyalty has just been trashed... Big East is talking Air Force and Boise,Idaho and West Virginia is now in the Southwest and Mid-America. There is no loyalty to anything including their region and it is all about greed and money. College programs do need money to operate but this is way beyond that. Traditional rivalries are disappearing and becoming meaningless as well. Everything had been rather stable for years until Arkansas jumped conferences in the 90's and then the SWC imploded partly because of that and also excessive cheating (SMU plus some more) plus the private schools in the conference had become dwarfed and were not competing very well ..on the field or in the stands. That break-up one made some sense and also the domino effect it started... This however has gotten absolutely insane.

---It is all about excessive greed... a sign of the times... note Wall Street scandals, Madoff, Enron, banking executive ripoffs, the congressional gridlock, and now the protests taking place about all of that.. It is not about doing what is best for the the people they "represent" but just themselves.. Who knows where it will end.....

---One good thing about the NFL, they all pretty much because of the system have a chance to compete well .... not true in the NCAA. There are only about 4-5 of them that have never been to a Super Bowl. Every team has had a period of being near the top.

All this reminds me of that movie "2012" when the South Pole ends up being somewhere it for darn sure shouldn't be.

Also, I can hear the NCAA powers that be responsible for all this re-alignment insanity finally sobering up and one day saying something like Sir Alec Guiness said in the movie "Bridge Over The River Kwai" as the bridge he led the way in being built by POW's was blown up (and he saying): "Oh my, what have I done?"

Popcorn or Milk Duds, anyone?

I think the next line in the movie (or very close to it) was: "Madness... Madness .... Madness..!!"

It applies here....

I believe the Brit' soldier had that line, too, right?

As a kid, I went around whistling that movie's soundtrack's main theme. Yes, a bit touched even back then, too.

Then....I followed the Mean Green for most of the last 38 years! That took me over the top!

Meds! where's my meds! :sword:
