DENTON – Riding a four-game winning streak, the UNT men’s basketball team hosts Florida Atlantic Sunday aiming to improve to its conference record to 6-1, which would be its best seven-game start to a league schedule since 1989.
Sunday’s tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m. CT from the Super Pit. The game will be broadcast on the Mean Green Sports Network, presented by Learfield and on ESPNU.
North Texas (14-4, 5-1) enters Sunday’s game with a 10-0 record at home this season. It’s the first time they’ve won the first 10 home games in a season since 2018-19. They haven’t had an 11-0 record at home since the 2010-11 season when they won the first 12 home games of the year.
The Mean Green’s 5-1 league record this season while impressive is not unfamiliar to the program. It is the seventh straight year North Texas has won five of its first six league games in a season. However, they haven’t had a 6-1 league record since 1989 when they were in the Southland Conference and finished with a 10-4 league record and won the SLC regular season championship. It would be the program’s last conference regular season title until 2020.
UNT’s 14-4 overall record is tied for its fourth-best 18-game start to a season in program history but once again not unfamiliar to recent memory. This is the third year in the last four where the Mean Green have won 14 of their first 18 games to a season.
Sunday North Texas hosts an Owl (10-9, 3-3) team that is under the leadership of first-year head coach John Jakus who for the previous seven seasons served on the staff at Baylor and helped lead the Bears to the 2021 National Championship.
FAU enters Sunday having last played a week ago as they beat Rice at home 75-73 on Jan. 13. Two of the Owls’ three conference wins this season have been on the road. They beat East Carolina and Charlotte on the road in early January.
The Mean Green lead the all-time series history against FAU 14-11 but heading into Sunday have lost five straight to the Owls.
After Sunday’s game against FAU the Mean Green travel north to face Wichita State on Wednesday.
