C-USA wants baseball too.

Baseball means nothing in all of this, but just to humor, CUSA is one of the big-6 baseball conferences, so they do care a little bit about that. The traditional CUSA powers are Rice, Tulane, Southern Miss and East Carolina. None of those teams are going anywhere. Honestly, if it's baseball you care about, I would stand pat in the Sunbelt. The Sunbelt is really, really up and coming in baseball.

But this is football talk, and I digress.

But at some point, universities really do care about who they are affiliated with, and how that affects their academic reputation.

And while UNT has made some really great strides in recent years (have you seen that new business building?), it still has quite a ways to go in the academic area. No conference is going to brag about a music school. Science and business, man. Science and business.

It's all disciplines across the board, and research funding, becoming a tier 1 research institution (which is our goal) and getting competitive and prestigious scholarships for students, ie Rhodes Scholars. It's a myriad of things. The music strength will only add to all that once we have those things in place and can become more competitive academically. We're doing the right things and it just takes time.

Money, money, money. Law School grads. may help that out, but we're talking 15-20 years before that's likely to kick in. Anyone reached out to the Saudi Ambassador who was in the news the other day? Hear he's rolling in the stuff.

I don't think SMU going to the Big East is good for UNT. I do think it will hurt us in recruiting, media coverage, and public perception (yes, it can get worse).

Then again, maybe I'm just frustrated by the failure of UNT to capitalize on the momentum of the early 00s, when our football program was better than the possibly soon-to-be FBS auto qualifier conference member SMU

The academics of UNT are not far from LSU. I met an engineering professor there who says himself their academics need work.

We just need to reach our goal of becoming a Tier 1 research institution. We get that recognition and funding and everything academically speaking will improve and compete with any other university, including UT. We are on that path, but it's going to take time.
