The Saudi ambassador, al-Jubeir, spent some of his formative years in North Texas, graduating from the University of North Texas with a bachelor's degree in political science in 1982. In 2006, UNT awarded him an honorary doctorate and the Distinguished Alumnus award. At the time, groups such as 9-11 Families for a Secure America objected to the university's designation given his role in the Saudi government.
