Somehow, the higher-ups have decided that it has to be an "either-or" situation rather than a "both-and" situation. For decades, we have successfully been known as the Eagles with the nickname the "Mean Green." Since we changed our name to the University of North Texas, people have interchangeably referred to the school both as "North Texas" and "UNT" with no confusion whatsoever. You can say either "OU" or "Oklahoma," and people understand what you're saying either way, and no one gets offended.

As far as schools that want to be known only by their initials, usually it's because they're embarrassed about their name. TCU tries to downplay the "Christian," SMU tries to downplay the "Methodist," just like KFC tries to downplay the "fried." Florida International sounds like an airport, so "FIU" it is. But why would we be ashamed of North Texas? We're proud of our state, we have a long history as "North Texas" in some form or another--what's to hide?

George and Hank said FIU requested that media only refer to them as "FIU" and not "Florida International". ULL has requested that media not refer to them as "ULL" nor "louisiana-Lafayette" but "Louisiana".

I always thought it strange the Univ of Okla wants to be labeled OU and not UO (I prefer zero-U <_< ), likewise Univ of Tulsa wants to be TU not UT. What's wrong with these people?

I would prefer as a compromise that we use "NT". If it's ok for Notre Dame (ND) to drop the U. it should be ok for us. Most USC fans simply refer to their school as "SC".

I have been around this old earth for 64 years and I have NEVER heard anyone around the water cooler verbally refer to Notre Dame as ND - and I have especially never heard that term used in the electronic media (print media - yes, on occasion).

And even if that were true, Notre Dame and USC have earned their "notoriety" and we have not been so fortunate.

Outside of our regional area, some still wonder who the hell we are (other than those who still think we are North Texas State).

I really don't care how the university is branded - but for God's sake, administration - find something and stick with it through perpetuity!

I never understood the hatred for saying UNT. It works for other schools like USC, UCLA, UT, OU, etc. Whenever I speak to alums from some of these places I NEVER hear them say "University of ----" or "-------- University". That still doesn't mean the schools change their signs, statues, buildings, etc. I hear UNT all the time around the DFW area anyway, so this is nothing new, or surprising, IMO....
