In 2005, Tulsa came to North Texas to play a game that many thought UNT would easily win. UNT was coming off 4 straight bowl seasons while TU had been 4-8 in 2004, 8-5 in 2003, and a dismal 1-11 in 2002. UNT came into the game as a slight favorite while Tulsa was trying to beat a respected regional team to establish their program.

Tulsa wins going away and goes on to establish themselves as a very good regional team for the next 6 years, winning 10 games a couple of years. North Texas's football program falls into an abysmal state, with the lowlights being a one win season and the hiring of a completely overmatched high school coach and staff.

Here we are in 2011. Tulsa has lost their successful head coach and hired an assistant with 4 years of college coaching experience (a very successful high school coach before that at Union HS). UNT is trying to re-establish it's football program with a win over a highly respected regional football program. No one really knows what Tulsa is at this point of 2011.

The potential sports irony this game presents for UNT fans is a kin to the Dallas win over MIami in the NBA finals for Maverick fans. This is a chance to slay the demons from that 2005 loss.

The loss to Tulsa in 2005 sent this program into the abyss. Wouldn't it be nice to have our coming out party against the same team that sent us into college football irrrelevancy?

Win.
