Was at Barnes and Noble....Lindy's is out. Never been a fan of Lindy's or Athlon's (for basketball or football).

Anyway, they pick us 4th in the West. They do pick Tony to be Player of the Year, and list him as the best NBA prospect.

Didn't buy it....will wait on The Sporting News Basketball Preview mag.

It would be a disastrous year if UNT somehow ended up 4th in the West. I know UNT will be "young" in some very real cases, but this is just not an intelligent prediction. I think SUMG is correct...I'll wait on a few more publications before I get excited about this one..agree that Lindy's is not in the top tier.

Ok...I'm a JJ Homer, I bleed Green more for JJ, his assistants, and his team over any other UNT sport. However, if we finish 4th I'll be asking for JJ head, or at least that he donate all of his salary and bonus money (if any for 4th place) be donated to charity as a trade off for him keeping his job. I don't agree with 4th, I'm expecting 1st place and NCAA birth. I guaranteed it in previous post. At least others in the Mean Green nation are disappointed to hear 4th in the West also. Just goes to show you that you can print anything. Does this publication believe that Denver will win our conference also?

If any of our coach's, staff, or players read this publication I'll bet they're as pissed about is wright up as I am today.

We finished 4th in the West last year and wound up being a 3pt. shot away from going to the NCAA's. It's not a death knell.

Well, didn't we finish 4th in the West this past season? They are predicting that even after losing almost every key player, we will perform about the same as a senior-heavy squad from the prior year. One could argue that they are being overly optimistic.

It's really all about peaking for March. Don't take that to mean I don't care about the out of conference games or the Sunbelt season. Even if we were to do well enough to get an at-large bid into the NCAA's, it'd still be about peaking for Hot Springs and the NCAA's.

That said, if last year showed us (OR our friends at UALR) anything, it's that you wanna be playing your best ball at the end.

I suppose that I can understand the reluctance to anoint any team, regardless of how talented the recruits, to a high place with only one returning starter.

The talent speaks for itself but other positives that may not be considered are that seven have played Division I basketball and that four more have played high-level AAU basketball. Add to that Mitchell, who has played on two national teams and the extra experience should enable this team to jell much faster than the normal high school recruits.

I'll be cautious with my expectations early but by the time conference play rolls around I expect that this team will be playing well together.

We did finish 4th when we should been first, so last year was disappointing until the late run at the tournament. Hoping this year is reversal, so a 4th pick but finish 1st or 2nd.

We should, based on the usual need for new and young players to jell together, be peaking about the time the conference tournament appears. I think JJ will focus on building a team out of a bunch of individual talent in hopes that we will really have something by March. That might mean playing with rotations early...and all the problems that can bring.

Berth. Not "birth." Which is good. Quite a bit less placenta involved.

Though if we do make a run through March I will be trying to make a tournament birth with whatever Yale co-ed is nearest me at the time.

Not going to get in another debate about NT's expectations this year at this time. But I will say, if Mitchell is POY, NT is going to be a lot better than 4th in the West. The other recruits could all be busts (no way) and the returning players plus the POY should equal a team better than a fourth in the West.

Solomon Bozemon won POTY for a team that finished 5th in the West. So, it can happen.

Touche, did happen so it is obviously possible. However, that points to a weak supporting cast and to some extent coaching. I think NT will be fine on both counts. Bozemon was a good player but not dominating. I don't think Mitchell would get POY unless he dominates and the team does well. Can't see the conference rewarding a first year player much less with only one semester unless he really distances from the other players in the league.
