I noticed that too. A lot of what he has to talk about right now is experience over his career. They are good stories for the most part, but hopefully he will have some more to tell about his current job.

I am glad the players were devastated after that performance. It was hard to watch, impossible to defend and took some air out of the weekend and opening. Granted it will get ramped up before Saturday, but looking so bad and Houston looking so good I know I am ecstatic about the tailgate, new stadium and atmosphere. I hope I am pleasantly surprised about the game.

Houston should have been our season opener. Scheduling FIU on the road as the first game was a mistake. Losing big probably cost us some fence-sitting fans. They will now just stay home and wear their Longhorn t-shirts in public.

I thought the conference made this scheduling decision. Did we have a choice?

I thought this after the FIU game. But, after driving up to watch Tulsa against OU, I see the real problem: We do not have enough FBS-quality offensive or defensive linemen on our roster. In short, Todd Dodge didn't know what he was doing on or off the field.

That last years' OL was anchored by Dickey recruits should have been a sign. Nice kids that Dodge recruited, I'm sure. But, very few of them have turned out to be FBS-quality players. And, that really hurts on the lines.

So, if the team gets crushed this season, it's because we have mainly FCS-quality players playing a 12 game FBS schedule.

This shouldn't be a new revelation for anybody. Coach McCarney has been saying since he took the job that this is not a FBS-quality roster especially on the offensive and defensive line.

Anybody with half a brain realizes that it is going to take at least 2-3 years to recover from the Dodge shipwreck. In the real world, when a coach inherits a depleted squad with years of poor recruiting decisions and even poorer coaching, there is no magic wand they can wave to make all that disappear instantly.

Feel free to call me crazy here, but I think the 2-4 year range should be for winning SBC Championships and big time OOC games. There is ZERO reason in my mind why this team (with the coaching staff we have) should not be able to play above their potential and win at least 4 games this year and show that we are headed in the right direction. Even with the terrible game we played at FIU, with a little improvement there are still 6-7 winnable games this year IMO.

Guys, I agree we don't have the talent needed to win all our games. Even most of our games. But I'm tired of giving excuses for not showing up for the season opener! I refuse to create any excuse for that performance last week.

If every team only played to their player's potential college football would be a very boring sport.

I still say, it's mostly coaching. But, look...I've also said the game is won and lost in the trenches. If we don't have the size and talent, we don't have the size and talent. I guess there's not much McCarney could have done about that.

Still, I don't like excuses and whatnot. They're bothersome for a school our size.

You're going to always find an occasion where the perfect storm occurs and a team plays way above there heads, getting an almost impossible win. I would agree with you coaching is huge in these types of wins.

However, this is definitely not the norm. Yes, it's a bad taste to see our team get blasted by a conference rival, but the same thing happened last year to the same team. This team has gone from bad 4 years ago to really bad the last 3. 6-8 consecutive years of bad football is going to affect the program. There's just no way to suger coat it.

This is just one game, there are 11 more to get 5 wins...

While I agree with most of what you say, bear in mind that when you say "with the coaching staff we had" Mac took more than 5 years to begin the turnaround at Iowa St. I'm not saying it will take that long here, and I know the circumstances are very different (plus he's a more experienced coach now), but the one bit of evidence we have on record for Mac is a slow turnaround.

* this isn't always a bad thing - it's still impressive as hell, and it is usually more sustainable long run. Just be careful with the timeframe.
