I gave SMU some support under the Bennett era, mainly because I am friends with Phil's brother that was on the staff. However with that being said, I still hate all of the d-bags that go to school there. I still remember yelling this at SMU fans when we played them. What rhymes with SMU? BOOOOOO!

And I'll never understand why we've blamed our whole history of athletics suckdom on SMU.

Damnitt!! I was just fixing to hake a post asking how long until Green Mean jumps in to disagree with the SMU smack talk.

You're fast bro.

We don't. There's plenty of blame to go around. My favorite scapegoat is former UNT president C.C. Nolan.

Anyone see this SMU onside kick attempt?

I was at the a $ m - smuT game and couldn't figure out what happened on that kick. Thought the wind blew it off the tee (it was blustery at Kyle Field). Then realized it was a total muffed kick.

BTW, it pains me to say this but smuT has a pretty decent team. They have really good size and the McDermott kid is pretty good.

My distaste for all things SMU started with one play and one player:

An Eric Dickerson TD run.

Around 1981 or 1982, Dickerson, the fastest player on the field by a mile, broke free on a long touchdown run against NT, his trademark upright running style an absolute thing of beauty

Around the 10 yard line, he turned around and backpedalled into the end zone while pointing his finger into the face of a pursuing NT defender.

It was bush league and would be penalized for unsportsmanlike behavior these days.

That moment became even more disgusting a few years later when the cheating scandal was revealed.

The image of professional athletes pointing their fingers in the face of our program was and is symbolic of the "cash vs trash" elitism that persists today, amongst many SMU fans.

Is my characterization of and outright disgust for SMU rational? Probably not, but that is pretty much what makes sports sports.

That I, or anyone for that matter, would give a rats a-- about that program is the bigger shame.

I was at that 1982 contest(?). The final score was 10-38. Eric Dickerson was flagged for that classless taunting, but obviously he wasn't that concerned. To be somewhat fair about the situation. A couple of plays before that, one of my favorite LB's, Lester Harper (#60 on your program), shot the gap on a pitch play and nailed Eric Dickerson before he could get going. Harper (all 5'10" X 205 lbs of him) put Dickerson on his back....it was a thing of beauty. However, Harper then stood over Dickerson and taunted him....thus the retaliatory TB run and the taunting finger pointing by Dickerson a couple of plays later.

I'll take a team full of Lester-Harper-undersized-overachievers any day over some of the three and four star players that we seem to covet these days....who don't seem to know how to tackle and wrap up.

Among other things, the perception that SMU has worked behind the scenes to keep us out of a good conference.

It isn't a perception. Since the 70's when they were one of the few that vigorusly worked to try to tear down what Hayden Fry was producing @ NT and lobbying to keep us out of the SWC to a few years ago when they backed UTEP and LA Tech for C-USA. SMU views us as an inferior, commuter junior college. As far as they are concerned "if you want to be rich and powerful in Dallas ___YOU SHOULD HAVE GONE TO SMU" NT grads are the worker drones in the eye of mustang faithful. They should never be viewed as educated leaders or associated with the powerful SMU social circles of the metroplex. :growl:

Then why have I had SMU grads reporting into me the last 5 years? Are they plants or just keeping an eye on the plebes? Why have I had other SMU grads actively mentor me and take an interest in my career? I will make fun of their football team and stereotypes same as any other school, but come on.

I know the people you describe are out there, but they are way more old, feeble, incapacitated and less essential to any Dallas-based commerce than you think. The only thing keeping the rivalry alive is a few people here who go to their message board, goad them into saying things they know piss us off and then eagerly reporting what pootiestang6969 had to say about us.

That said, I'm still pissed A&M didn't break 50.

Geez SE...all these years later, it was (Mo)Lester's fault?

I take it back. I love SMU.

Mark.

Ok Campbell, now you're going too far. Just think of it the way I have all these years.

..."(Mo)Lester" as he is standing over Dickerson... "Here's a little somethin' from us true amateur athletes"...

(Dickerson, as he's pointing his finger and crossing the goal-line") Hey man, just doin' what I get paid to do....sorry you ain't better paid"
